Editor's note:
Bronchoalveolar carcinoma (BAC) comprises only a small percentage of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) adenocarcinomas, but its unique characteristics have enabled researchers to identify improved therapeutic strategies for BAC patients over the past few years. To gain some perspective on how these strategies have affected outcomes, Medscape spoke with Vincent A. Miller, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Will it help you live longer if you stay on pregnazone if you have idiopathic fibrosis of the lung?

I was just wondering because my grandma had isiopathic fibrosis of the lung and I think that the doctor took her off of it but the actor Jerry Lewis has idiopathic fibrosis of the lung and taking pregnazone and he's still living. I was just wondering if taking her off of that killed her sooner.

Has anyone ever had a tumor or node on their lung after a ct scan?

My dad had a heart attack last week and his papers that came home from the hospital said that they noticed a right upper lobe hilar adenopathy. As well as a node - they also asked if he had primary carcinoma? So, should this be looked into further?
----------

Hilar adenopathy means that the lymph nodes are swollen on the right side where the blood vessels enter the lung. It doesn't necessairly mean he has cancer. But this should definitely be investigated further because cancer needs to be ruled out as a possible cause -- especially given the comment about carcinoma which suggests this adenopathy looks suspicious. Lung cancer or lymphoma would be the common cancer causes of hilar adenopathy. Good luck to your dad and I hope it turns out to have a benign cause.  (+ info)

in your experience, has squamous cell lung carcinoma ever been miss-diagnosed?

In a well equipped hospital, although all tests carries a false postive result, Diagnosis is based on multiple tests, hence it is less likely to be wrong, if all other tests are affirmative.

Note that one of the stages of grief is denial. Acceptance will come later.  (+ info)

Does anyone know anything about small cell lung carcinoma??

My grandmother was just diagnosed with it and has under gone radiation and starting chemo. Any info will help...
----------

IN THE US, lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer deaths among both men and women. In fact, north Americans have the highest rates of lung cancer in the world. In 1997, some 178,100 new cases were diagnosed and roughly 160,400 deaths occurred from the disease. Sadly, the 5-year survival rate for persons with lung cancer is only 14%. Since the 1940s, the increase in lung cancer mortality by gender has followed historic patterns of smoking, with a 20-year time lag. About 90% of male lung cancer deaths and 80% of female lung cancer deaths are attributable to cigarette smoking. Although smoking is by far the major risk factor for lung cancer, certain industrial substances, such as asbestos, and environmental factors can contribute.
Small cell lung carcinoma is distinctive from other kinds of lung cancer (metastases are already present at the time of discovery) and accounts for approximately 110,000 cancer diagnoses annually. A deletion of part of chromosome 3 was first observed in 1982 in small cell lung carcinoma cell lines.
As with other cancers, mutations in a variety of molecules (oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes) that control cell growth and division are observed, and no one mutation is likely to result in cancerous growth. Basic research into the function of these molecules - how and when they play their role - should help the fight against lung, and other, cancers and give clues to find appropriate therapies.  (+ info)

had papillary carcinoma thyroid went surg, iodine131 for lung metasic, cured.still pulse rate high (breathless)

i had papillary carcinoma thyroid (age 16) and lungsmetasis (3mm)went surgery with iodine 131(may 2007) in CT scan lungs metasis REGRESSED still i suffer from high pulse rate and breathing problem.tablets taken elthorxin 250 mg, inderial 20 mg.echo normal, ecg normal,(dlco, pft normal) .can any one give me the cause(ANSWER) for BREATHE-LESS-NESS and high pulse rate(after taking inderal 20mg pulse rate is 120) for which i am suffering still.
----------

Pulse rate can be high because you are short of breath which can at times put you in a panic/anxiety state. With panic or anxiety heart rate tends to increase. I see you are taking meds for thyroid hormone replacement and heart rate control but nothing for shortness of breath. Have you asked your doc to prescribe something for the shortness of breath (example: mini neb treatments not albuterol though because it can cause increase in heart rate, maybe xopenex mini neb or inhalers if not contraindicated.) Hope this helps. Take care.  (+ info)

Ask her to do pranayam for atleast an hour in the open in the morning if she can under the strict guidance of a yoga instructor. She should also be given food containing sufficient amount of garlic ( atleast 1 Kg a month) but well cooked like in south Indian rasam, vatral kuzhmbu; punjabi/rajasthani khadi, pulao, dals/chole, curries with garam masala. Her condition should improve to a good extent.  (+ info)

How long does someone with stage 4 Renal cell carcinoma have?

My grandfather, 83, has stage 4 renal cell carcinoma. The cancer has spread to his lungs (several tumors on lungs), bladder, gall bladder, and the doctor said he could feel tumors all over. I just want a realistic outlook for his life expectancy. He will be receiving immunotherapy in a few weeks but his general practice doctor seemed to think he had weeks to a few months to live. His oncologist didn't give him a time frame. I just want to know what he is looking at. He already is having trouble breathing.
