Is it possible to get relief from Carpal tunnel Syndrome by massage therapy?

My mother is 83 and over the years has developed carpal tunnel syndrome by crocheting. Does she have to have surgery?

Unfortunately there is no real cure for CTS. True CTS is a buildup of scar tissue in the carpal tunnel. Generally, when the wrists are flexed or extended you increase the pressure on the (finger) tendons in the carpal tunnel. Combine this with finger movements and you cause severe friction and eventually inflamation. The inflamation causes scar issue. Compounded over time the result is CTS.
Massage can attempt to alleviate some of the pressure as well as muscle tightness and soreness in the forearms.
Seek a qualified Neuromuscular Massage Therapist or Myofascial Massage Therapist to address this situaton specifically.
After activities that produce inflamation, ice is the key. The massage therapist can also help you determine the best ways to ice safely. They can also help correct the perpetuating factors involved.  (+ info)

What can I do about my carpal tunnel syndrome? What are some at-home remedies?

I have a painful case of carpal tunnel in both of my wrists. I type all the time, so that could be part of it. I wear a brace on one hand, and I wrap gauze around the other. Are there any home remedies I could try?

I type more than I have to, but I do have to type some because I take a computer class.

Can you get Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from masturbation?

Hi, I am a male in high school who has been masturbating since the 9th grade. I am now in 10th grade. I masturbate at most for 30 minutes a day. At this rate, am I at risk for any hand injury such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
----------

I think it would all depend on how you are moving your wrist. Everyday? Are you serious? You are putting your penis at greater risk of impotence than anything.  (+ info)

Can you get Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from masturbating?

I am in high school and I have been masturbating for about a year and a half. I am afraid that if I continue to masturbate, I will get Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or some other kind of injury. Does masturbation really give you hand injuries? Please be honest, and thank you so much.

Go find yourself a good masseuse and you will see a huge improvement. I know because I've been there and done that. At it's worst I couldn't write or type without pain and now it's down to some numbness in my fingertips.

It really works!  (+ info)

What can I do to ease the pain of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Does anyone here have Carpal Tunnel? If so, how do you soothe the pain? Any tricks? I'm pretty sure that I have it although I haven't been officially diagnosed. I get shooting pain of my left arm and I have a brace (sometimes I wrap my arm in a sort of gauze tape and that helps)

Thanks!

There are exercises that can help.

*Hold one arm out straight with your palm down. Use the other hand to grab the fingers and gently bend the wrist down. Feel the stretch in the forearm and hold for 30 seconds. Switch arms and repeat. Then hold the first arm out straight again, palm up. With the other hand, grab the fingers and gently bend the wrist down. Feel the stretch in the forearm and hold for 30 seconds. Switch arms and repeat.

*Squeeze a racquetball or tennis ball 30-100 times in each hand. (I like to use those squishy balls that are usually give out free by businesses at health fairs, etc. ... I have one that's a globe and one that's a heart, and one from the Navy in navy blue with yellow "stitching" like a baseball. They are easier to squeeze!)

For a slightly different version of these exercises and others, as well as more information on carpal tunnel, go to lifespan.org/ Click on Search in the gray bar under the head, and on the page that comes up, type "Carpal tunnel exercises" in the box and hit the Search button. Exercises are about the third link down.

A product that I've used that helps ease pain for several hours at a time is Soothanol X2. It's a multiple-ingredient natural oil that takes just 2-4 drops. It feels warm and soothing. It has a scent that I find appealing, though some might find it "medicinal." It is available online through HSI (Health Sciences Institute). It's not cheap - one little bottle for $29.95+$4.95 s/h ... but it goes a very long ways! And larger quantities are sold at discount, with free shipping if you buy 6 bottles or more at a time. It seems to work for some people, but not for others. My husband and I find it gives us some relief, but it does nothing for my Mother.

At any rate, good luck. I hope you can find something to help. I never felt like the braces did me much good. I had better luck with the exercises and the oil.  (+ info)
