How can an assistance/service dog help a person with heart disease?

The problems the heart disease causes on a day to day basis is mainly constant fatigue, stopping him from being able to work and keep up with house work. His fatigue gets to the point where he doesn't eat dinner because he's too tired to cook it from working all day (in an office). How could an assitance dog help?

I can see a large dog helping with laundry by pulling the basket to the laundry room so he doesn't have to carry it. Other than that, what can a dog do to help?

Thanks so much!

A service dog has to be trained to do something that the disabled handler can not do because of their disability. To figure out if one could help you need to make a list of things that he needs help with and then next to it, what a dog can do to help.

I'll use my medical condition and my service dog as an example:

syncope: dog alerts to blood pressure drops, allowing me to sit and not loose consciousness
not able to pick things up without causing syncope: dog picks up dropped objects
unable to seek help when needed: dog gets people by name
get dizzy, unable to walk straight: use mobility harness with dog to stabilize
become weak and unable to get out of bed: dog gets me water to avoid dehydration and medications

He has more, but do you get what you need to do? This is the best way to figure out what to train a dog for.

Oh, and before the people who don't know come on here and tell you otherwise, service dogs in the US are NOT certified or registered. You do NOT have to get one from a program and you CAN owner train.

To have a service dog, you must meet a 3 prong test:
1) the handler must be disabled per the ADA (has a medical or psychological condition that significantly negatively impacts one or more major life activity)
2) The dog must be trained to do something to mitigate the disability.
3) The dog must be trained to behave properly in public.

ETA: Didn't catch the whole Canada thing. The way to figure out what you need is the same. The way to get a dog is not. Canadian service dog laws vary by provence but I do believe that they do all require certification by a recognized organization.

Oh, and its Farfa not Fartfa!  (+ info)

Can you get a disease from being around a dead dog?

Well my dog passed away today, and he's in the garage. I am not gonna touch him, because dead things make me feel ill.

However, could I get a disease from him being in the same house as me, with him being dead an all?

I am sad about his passing, but I also have to keep my own safety in mind ya know.
----------

Unless he died of a disease:-
No, not straight away but as he decomposes you are at increasing risk of catching something of him, depending on how hot the weather the sooner this will begin to happen.  (+ info)

Are there vaccinations which prevent dogs from getting diseases in foreign countries?

I may be moving to the Philippines in the next couple years, and I will be bringing my lab mix with me when I move. I will be there for about 4 years, and I realize there are many diseases which dogs may potentially be exposed to there. Are there vaccinations which prevent dogs from obtaining diseases in particular countries?
And I realize it is a risk to bring my dog to a third world country, I'm aware of that. But there is no way that I could leave her for that length of time, even if I have to take extreme precautions with her.

Yes, there are vaccinations there.  (+ info)

How is IV fuilds helping a dog with kidney disease?

I am curious about the process of injecting a dog that has kidney disease with IV fluids. I understand it helps, but how does the fluids make their way from under the skin to the blatter and flushes the kidneys in the meantime?
----------

The fluids are given subcutaneous, which means the fluids are given under the skin. Then the body slowly absorbs the fluids and they get flushed out through the kidneys which help get rid of toxin build up in the kidneys. I did this with my cat for two years and it really helped.  (+ info)

Can humans have an intestinal disease that produces a smell similar to that of a dog with parvo?

Kind of a icky question...I know but I am worried because a friend of mine gives off a smell (especially when using the bathroom) that is very similar to the smell of a dog with parvo. It is a rotting smell...not joking. I have smelled a dog with parvo and it is something you dont forget. Can humans get something similar...or at least something that makes you smell like you are rotting from the inside out? Sorry this is so gross but it is serious.
----------

Well, I am no doctor but if I have learned anything from Dr. Oz its that your BM tells alot about your health. It should never have a strong odor and should be brown to dark brown...never black,maroon,green...anything like that. It should be mentioned to a doctor. It could just be that he or she is getting to much protien in their diet or they are getting too much or not enough of some other food or drink...but bring it up to the doc and see what he says. Better safe than sorry.  (+ info)

Can my dog or me get any disease if my dog ate human feces?

I live an an urban area, and unfortunately my dog ate some human remains in our nearby heroin and bum infested park. I'm concerned for the health of my dog and myself. Is there a hepatitis risk? Any information to put my mind at ease would be helpful.
----------

There is a very little risk of getting any infection because the Hepatitis is not a zoonosis and it cant be transfered to caninie species .  (+ info)

Is it possible to contract hand foot & mouth disease from dog faeces?

I suffered from Hand Foot and Mouth disease 2 years ago and I’ve just started getting the blisters on my hand and some small ulcers in my mouth. I’m living with an unhousetrained dog who’s owner leaves me to clean up her poo.

Could this be where I’m getting the infection from?

Thanks, i thought that was the case but I just thought I'd check just in case.
----------

No.

HFMD is caused by an enterovirus called coxsackievirus A16. Oral ingestion is the primary source of infection. It can be carried in oral and nasal secretions, saliva, blister drainage and infected stool BUT it's a HUMAN syndrome. It can also be transmitted by lack of handwashing and then transferring the virus to the mouth. HFMD is not transmitted between humans and animals.  (+ info)

What is the most common contagious infections, diseases, etc. in dogs and cats that humans can catch?

I am doing a science project on dogs and cats and I was just wondering what the most common contagious infection, diseases, etc. that humans can catch from being around dogs and cats?
----------

I am unsure of how common it really is, but humans are able to get diseases from cats. One that is known well is called cat-scratch fever which is caused by a bacteria named Bartonella henselae. These bacteria live in the intestines of cats and can be transmitted to humans via a bite or scratch. It is found in about 40% of the cat population so I would consider it pretty common. Basically it targets lymph tissue in the human and results in swelling around the bit or swollen glands, fatigue, fever, and body aches. It's fairly easy to treat with antibiotics such as doxycycline or erythromycin. I hope this helps!  (+ info)
