Do dogs carry diseases infectious to babies?

My mom is going to have a baby soon and she doesn't think it's safe to keep the dogs in the house. Do dogs really carry a disease infectious to babies, but not more matured humans?
----------

dogs do carry diseases that can be spread to babies, my 1 year old son got sick from some sort of bacteria that is found in the dogs poop, the same bacteria can also be found in chicken that isn't fully cooked  (+ info)

Do dogs carry skin diseases that can be transmitted to humans through touch?

My friend has 14 dogs, and some of the dogs were sitting on my lap. When I left her house I started to itch on my legs. Now I have little red bumps on my legs and stomach? They itch like crazy.
----------

Yes they do. The itchy bumps you have are probably dog flea bites though. Use some antihistamine cream and tell your friend. She needs to de flea the dogs, probably she is not allergic to them so doesn't notice.  (+ info)

How do I make my Giardia infected dog gain weight?

My dog has been diagnosed with Giardiasis but has already been treated for it. They say Giardia lives with a dog forever and I believe that's the reason he's not gaining weight. How do I get him to gain weight even though he's not having an outbreak? Keep in mind he's also got Celiac's disease- so no grains/wheats.
----------

feed the dog several small meals a day.
there are special foods available:no grains!
you can cook for him too:quinoa is gluten free!
use pancreatic enzymes to help him absorb more nutrients:these enzymes are sold in health stores for people.
sold under:digestive enzymes  (+ info)

Can a dog get a disease from a dead squirrel and transfer illness to a human.?

My dog was licking a dead flat squirrel in the street, then she through up her food for 2 days. Then I got an infection in my tonsils and 1 day after that cleared I got a very bad infection in my eye my doctor doesn't know what caused it. Could I have caught from my dog due to the dead squirrel.
----------

Yes, because you don't know if that squirrel had any diseases. Take your dog to the vet and then tell your doctor what happened and your thoughts on the matter.  (+ info)

What kind of diseases/parasites can be spread from geese to dogs or geese to humans?

We've hatched a Canadian Goose who's mom was killed by coyote and he's about 2 years now. I was wondering what kind of parasites he could possibly transfer to humans if someone had accidentally stepped in it's droppings or something, and to dogs too? Even if he doesn't eat grass or anything off the ground from outside or near any farm animals.
----------

Giardia,Coccidia
also(a bacteria) :Salmonella  (+ info)

What are the affects of Parvo on a dog who has survived the disease?

I heard that Parvo effects the brain for dogs, is that true?
----------

Not true. Those that have been successfully treated are normal happy dogs. Our vet here has treated many dogs with parvo. The trick is early detection and treatment....  (+ info)

I just got a tick off of him and I don't want to spend $100 for the vet to tell me that he doesn't have lime disease.

Our dog has been diagnosed with cushing's disease and diabetes. How can we boost his immune system?

He takes anipryl daily for the cushings and receives insulin injections daily for his diabetes. He has a severe dermatitis/skin infection right now and currently takes 2 antibiotics and an antihistamine daily for these complications. What can we give him to boost his immune system so as not to complicate these other health issues?
----------

You should talk to your vet for this question.
Also post animal questions in the animal section . You will get more answers .

BTW- I have both diabetes and Cushing's.  (+ info)

What does is mean if my dog has Auto Immune Disease?

Her blood count is low and she is bleeding internally. She's dying. :( What could have caused this? Is she in a lot of pain?

The vet says they can give her a blood transfusion but will it do any good?

She's a golden retriever, 10 years old.
----------

It sounds like she has autoimmune hemolytic anemia. If so, she should have been given steroids to combat the condition. Some dogs survive this just fine. I lost my sheltie to it earlier this year, please go here for a very sensitive and hopeful website:
http://www.cloudnet.com/~jdickson/

p.s. my dog did not get diagnosed in time to receive the blood transfusion. I have heard it can buy them enough time in order for the steroids to work. You need to base your decision on your dog's present health and to what degree you are willing to commit to financially.
Should your pup's spleen burst, let her go.
If she goes into DIC, let her go.
I had a terrible decision to make in about 30 min. I hope it is not the same for you. Namaste and my heart goes out to you!  (+ info)

What diseases can/cannot be passed from humans to animals and vice versa?

I do believe that the cold and flu viruses can be passed to dogs and cats, am I correct? What about everything else like certain diseases...specifically hepetitis, aids, anything contagious from human to human.... say for example if a bird bites a human who has hepititis, can the bird get it then pass it on to another human if they bite another human?

i understand there is a very wide range of both diseases and animals, but could you please just share what you know specifically? thanks
