What should my fat percentage for my arms, legs and trunk be?

I just got a scale that could not only give me my fat percentage for my whole body, but could also break it down to give me my fat percentage on my body parts (for example: Arms with 42% of fat, legs with 30% etc.) However, it doesn't tell me what the norm should be.

Could anyone tell me what's the normal fat percentage for arms, legs and trunk should be?

Thank you very much.

What body fat percentage is needed for flat abs?

I am apparently around 22.5% body fat, in the healthy range, but there is still a stubborn layer of fat around my lower abs. What body fat percentage should I be aiming for to shed it and get visible abs?
----------

Well I have 24% body fat and have flat, toned abs. It depends how you carry your weight.

But to have defined abs like a six pack, usually around 15%-17% body fat.  (+ info)

What is the least amount of fat you can eat in a healthy diet?

I know your body needs some fats, but a lower fat diet is certainly healthiest. What is a low fat diet? I mean, going completely fat free is unhealthy, but eating 65 grams of fat (recommended for a 2,000 calorie diet) is not necessary. Can I be healthy just getting the fats from healthy foods like breads and oatmeal? Sorry for all of the questions- I could just brainstorm on this topic.
----------

Too often, this question is inaccurately answered. Weight loss guru's tend to tout what they see as problems with fat intake, and many people who think they are cardiologists speak up with false information.

There is a lot more to proper nutrition than total calories or someone's errorenous ideas about "max fat grams." For example, you have to consume fat with carbohydrates in order to metabolize the carbs. Fat in the diet is necessary for absorption of fat soluable vitamins. There are many facts to consider.
Here is a question presented to a nutritionist on this topic:

QUESTION: I eat a balanced diet except I concentrate on the fat content. If it's available in non-fat such as milk or cheese, that's what I buy and eat. My fat intake is typically between 5 and 10% of my calories. I do weight train and do cardio workouts three times a week. Is my fat intake too low?

ANSWER: Possibly. Consider these facts about your body's need for fat.

It is recommended that people consume 30% of total daily calories from fat, 55% from carbohydrates and 15% from protein. So, you are not consuming nearly enough fat in your diet according to these guidelines.

Fats perform many vital roles to aid in the body's functions. Triglycerides, the main form of fat in the body and in foods, constitute most of the stored energy in the body. Triglycerides yield over twice as much energy per gram as carbohydrates and protein (fats provide 9 calories per gram, while carbohydrates and protein provide 4 calories per gram). The free fatty acids, released from triglycerides are the major source for fuel for the body at rest and during light activity.

Triglycerides and other lipids (fat) in foods also carry fat-soluble vitamin A ,D, E and K to the small intestine. In doing so, lipids aid in absorption of these nutrients. Without fat you are at risk for developing deficiencies of these vitamins.

Food fat causes the stomach to empty more slowly than either carbohydrates or protein and it imparts satiety - the satisfied feeling you have after eating. If you reduce your fat intake below 20% of total energy intake, you will get hungry quicker.

The essential fatty acids, omega-3 and omega-6, are substances that need to come from the diet. They are necessary building materials for molecules and compounds that perform such vital functions in your body as regulation of blood pressure, blood clotting, immune response and childbirth. Excellent sources of these essential fatty acids are salad dressings containing Canola or soybean oil, salmon, tuna and sardines.

Another thing to be aware of is when fat is removed from a product, something else must be added, usually carbohydrates in order to maintain a desirable taste and texture. For this reason, many fat-reduced and fat-free products are still very energy dense - containing a high amount of calories. Remember that calories count too, no matter if they come from fat, carbohydrates or protein so be sure to moderate your portions if you consume a lot of fat reduced products. Consider the increase in the number of low fat foods while the American public's average weight has gone up. Low fat and fat free foods are not the magic solution for weight loss.

Have you tried the Healthy Body Calculator? If you put your physical data and activities in, it will calculate a healthy amount of calories and fat based on your nutrition goals.

A trained and licensed nutritionist is your friend. There is way too much nutrition quackery in the world today. If you read something about nutrition, check for the author's credentials before you take it as fact. The word "Moderation" is key, and if you eat fresh healthy foods in moderation, you will be eating a healthy diet.

Hope this helps answer your question.  (+ info)

How much fat should I lose before I begin to lift weights?

I am 5'8 and weight around 162lbs. I am a guy. I have lost a lot of weight, but I have hit a plateau and still have some belly fat and chest fat. It is not that much though. My question is should I try to reduce my fat even more? I know that if you have much fat and you lift weights, the muscle grows under the layer of fat. I do not have much fat left .
----------

Start lifting weights now! I don't know why you are waiting. It will help you lose weight faster and knock you off of that plateau! The more muscle you build, the more calories your body will burn.

Be cautious when you start lifting weights, don't believe everything you hear about weight lifting and supplements and such. Here is a link to an article I just wrote for people who need help starting a weight lifting routine http://ezinearticles.com/?Weight-Lifting-Routine-For-Beginners---7-Simple-Tips-to-Kick-Start-Your-Weight-Lifting-Workouts&id=2418653  (+ info)

What fat burning/diet pills are safe to use along with exercise?

I understand a lot of people say that it's pathetic to take diet pills or fat burning pills without exercise because most of it is made of caffeine. I am 17 years old and I play football, I want to really reduce my body fat percentage. I have been gaining weight because I have an ankle injury and I cannot exercise on it a lot. I want to use a safe supplement in small portions to help me achieve my goals.
----------

Whenever you are trying to lose weight, you should concentrate on these three things which all work together in providing a healthier and quicker weight loss goal for yourself. I have found this combination really successful in my weight loss plans. The first thing is exercising and how much you can put forth into it. The more you exercise, the more results you will see. The next thing is dieting and the calorie intake. If you exercise more, technically you could eat more? Always watch what you eat.

Now the last step in a good weight loss plan is always a good diet pill that can help you get to the end of the road. I have found Proactol which is a natural herbal diet pill to be the best around. It's an appetite suppressant along with being a fat blocker which stops up to 28% of fat you eat. Read up about it at TheWeightLossPlace.com where I saved money on it. Proactol really works well with exercising which gives you plenty of energy to perform. Along with that your diet will be affected by Proactol due to the appetite suppressant and fat blocker. If you slip up on meals, the fat blocker kicks in. It's really great to stop food cravings.

Concentrate on those three things and the combination is deadly for the fat cells in your body. Good luck and I hope this helps.  (+ info)

What is saturated fat exactly, and what does it do to your body?

Today, I ate pretty good calorie-wise. (I ate about 1,500 calories.) However, I found that I ate close to 20g of saturated fat (the daily value.)

I know that saturated fat is bad for you, but why? Is it going to make me fatter and gain weight, or will I not gain because I ate the right amount of calories?
----------

Saturated fat is considered bad for you not so much because of weight gain, but because it clogs your arteries. There are two main types of fats, saturated (bad) and unsaturated (good). Unsaturated fats are further subdivided into mono- and poly-unsaturated fats.

The word "saturated" indicates that the fat solidifies at room temperature, while unsaturated means that it doesn't. Have you ever seen cooking grease from bacon or beef collect? It becomes thick and congealed, it solidifies once it cools to room temperature. Compare that to olive oil (an unsaturated fat), which stays nice and liquid at room temperature. Now imagine those two types of fat in your arteries. Obviously one is going to move through the blood stream much more easily than the other.

That is why you should avoid eating saturated fats, and when you do eat them, have them in moderation. They hike up your cholesterol which puts you at greater risk for plaque build-up in your arteries, which can cause blockage and eventually a heart attack. In moderation they are okay, but try to avoid them when possible.

Hope that helps!  (+ info)
