How long does ataxia last after you quit drinking?
alcohol destroys brain cells at an alarming rate, brain cells do not regenerate. It is possible the ataxia will never go away, unless some other part of the brain takes over the tasks of the parts that were destroyed to cause the ataxia in the first place. (

Is there any homeopathic/ayurvedic mecicines for ataxia which readily avaiable in india?
I would like to know whether there is any medcines which readily avaialble in india for ataxia.either it may be homeopathy/ayurvedic or any type

Homeopathic medicines are just water. The higher "concentration" means they are MORE diluted until finally there is not even ONE molecule of the original substance in there. It's just water. No medicine. Don't waste your money. (

Hello everyone out ther, My question is......Does anybody know a good medication for cerebellar ataxia?
I been diagnosed with cerebellar ataxia, head injuries they (DRS) said they have give me many medications and none seem to work.
I have to use a walker and thats embarrissing, its been about 3 1/2 years and I still haven't got better.. I see the neurolgist twice a year for about 3 mintutes, I know I should go to a more professional Neurolist but the funds aren't allowing it, so if anybody out there have a similiar situation please tell me the medication, Cerebellar controls most all functions in your system, there has to be something out there that would at least help.

All I can give is hope. BF had botched brain surgery and has gone from needing someone to feed him, to back to collage and mechanic work. Took five years but he said the brain can eventually reroute some of the connections. Don't forget to enjoy what you can of the present, don't wait to have fun. Try to make the walker something people smile at when they see it. I've seen old fashioned bulb horns on walkers or racing stripes. It might help with the embarrasment. If people know it makes you uncomfortable then they start looking around like they're trying not to look and thats so hard to put up with for you. Make it a little funny and that will make them feel like it's ok to look at it and you . They will see you instead of just your walker. Hope this helps. (

that's an interesting assignment! go to the yahoo group u_r_not_alone (may have put the underscores in the wrong places, but you'll find it!) and ask there. it's a support group for people with ataxia. the group leader is chris, and he's very willing to answer what he can. tell him missy gave you his name, and tell him i said to treat you right! i'd put you into contact with my father as he was diagnosed 15 years ago, but he doesn't have email access this week! best of luck on your assignment! am i likely to have any cognitive brain damage associated with ataxia?
as i think my balance problem is associated with a lower brain stroke in the condition known as ataxia,am i likely to have any associated brain damage to memory and attention span or are all functions located in the upper brain?
----------
Generally the things you are concerned about reside in the "upper" brain. Is this a diagnosis you have made yourself or by the medical profession?
In either case you should discuss this with a physician (

can you get Ataxia from a head injury?
ok i wrote not long ago about my son hitting his head. well i am still going through symptoms and now they diagnosed him with possible ataxia which is ( Ataxia (Trust Mark: Doctor-Reviewed)
Lack of coordination in the muscles. Ataxia, an extreme lack of coordination of the muscles, is a symptom of damage to the central nervous system) he is being referred to a pediactric neuro doctor. i just want to know if his head injury could have caused it?
----------
Since the brain is the control center of the nervous system, yes. Many brain injured persons are ataxic - but that does not mean it will last forever. (

has anyone heard of a condition where a person gets ataxia or becomes immobile when smoking cigarettes?
i have a friend who used to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day without any problems but lately when he smokes, he gets bouts of ataxia where he feels vertigo, cannot move properly, is reduced to walking in little steps and is forced to lie down for a period of 8-12 hours. The ataxia experienced is for a long period of time and the walking gait, balance, and stance are affected. The best way to describe it is the movements of my friend become robotic and cannot do much physical activity. Has anyone ever heard of or experienced this condition and if so are there any remedies. Thanks all

He needs to go to the emergency room when this happens. Or see his doctor NOW. This is not from smoking cigarettes. (

What is the difference between an effect and a symptom?
Isn't that basically the same thing?
For a Biology project, I am researching Friedreich's Ataxia, and I have to write down the effects and the symptoms... and I can't tell apart which are symptoms and which are effects...
----------
Hi Lola! An effect is what the disease does to the body. For example, an effect of asthma is to constrict bronchial tubes. Another word for effect is "pathogenesis" - you may want to try searching for that instead. A symptom is how the disease presents itself - for example, shortness of breath in asthma. So for Friedreich's, the ataxia is a symptom. The pathogenesis of the disease causes the ataxia, and all of the other symptoms. Good luck! (
