Where can I buy Glucose for a fondant recipe?

I've looked for Glucose at Wal-Mart and all I could find was the tablet form of glucose in the pharmacy. Does glucose come in liquid or powder form??

It comes in liquid form. Buy it at any cake decorating supply store, or craft stores that sell that if they are large and have a good selection. On the outisde chance they have it, you may try calling a couple pharmacies and seeing if they have liquid glucose. They just might. What are the pathways that glucose takes to get to the big toe?

I need to trace glucose from the mouth all the way down to a cell in the big toe. Once at the cell i know the steps but i need help with the rest

Once chewed and swallowed, it passes through the stomach, and is absorbed by the small intestine directly into the bloodstream. Once in the blood, it follows the normal arterial pathways to each and every cell in the body.  (+ info)

What effect does a prenatal glucose screen have on the baby?

My Ob wants me to do the oral glucose screen next month (will be 28 weeks). I don't eat a lot of sweets and am wondering how much of this the baby gets.

It shouldn't have any effect on the baby. This is a recommended screening for all pregnant women and it will be fine. Good for you for staying away from the sweets!  (+ info)

How do you test your blood glucose when your doctor advises you to take medication for diabetics with meals ?

Checking BG levels while fasting and post fasting. Are you allowed to take medication or not while testing Blood Glucose after taking medicine at breakfast ? Should I delay taking the medicine after breakfast. Pls help, am confused, my Doctor is out of the country.

Hi, I can help you with this. I've been Diabetic for over 10 yrs. The first time you test is first thing in the morning,before eating & taking your meds. That is your "fasting level" for the day. Then, you know to eat small meals that have equal parts of proteins & carbs every 4-5 hours. (proteins being all meats,beans,peanut butter & carbs being pasta,potatoes,rice) I promise you it will become like second nature to you once you get it down. Then you can either check before your meal or most likely 2 hours after a meal & that way you'll know if you ate the right thing. Your fasting blood sugar should be between 75 & 125 & then 2 hours after a meal, you should be (where your Dr. would tell you) or if you ate correctly between 100- 145. Now every time your reading is over 170 it's killing your vital organs & you know you don't want that. It will take a while to "even out" & soon you'll be able to tell without testing if it's high or low. Of course you would still test to be sure. I found out the "hard way" that you really can't cheat & tell your Dr. that you've been doing good when you haven't because they have a test they do that tells wat your levels have been for the past thre months! AAAHHHH I know! BUT I assure you,if you just get used to this diet,you won't be hungry & the difference in how you feel is truely astounding! What is the normal variability for a blood glucose meter?

I recently bought a cheap blood glucose meter (the "TrueTrack Smart System" kit) over the internet to check out my blood sugars after a relative was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Since I have no symptoms and am not overweight I was just expecting to be reassured; but I found my 8hr fasting glucose over several days seemed to range from 98 to 124 indicating potential prediabetes. However, this morning I became confused on getting a reading of 144 despite not having eaten anything for over 12 hours. I decided to do several tests in a row and the results were: 144 130 117 111 126 110 104. I made sure my fingers were very clean and dry & of course used new strips & lancets each time. The meter did not come with glucose control solution but does have a test card you can insert in the strip port which then reads "OK". My question is, what is the normal range of reproducibility you can expect in readings from a blood glucose meter, and should I disregard these results and throw it out?

The FDA allows home meters to vary up to 20%.

Even the best meters will give a pretty high variation when tested like this.

what is the difference between intolerance and allergy ?

Is there any point in which intolerance to a certain food (say milk or eggs for example) turns into an allergy or are they totally unrelated ?

Is intolerance showing up only as digestion problems and not other allergy symptoms ?

Can you mistakenly interrpret intolerance as allegry in blood tests or vica versa ?

An intolerance would not show up as an allergy in blood tests.

How Common Are Food Allergies and Intolerances?
Food allergies affect about 2 to 4% of adults and 6 to 8% of children. Food intolerances are much more common. In fact, nearly everyone at one time has had an unpleasant reaction to something they ate. Some people have specific food intolerances. Lactose intolerance, the most common food intolerance, affects about 10% of Americans.

What Causes Food Allergies and Intolerances?
Food allergies arise from sensitivity to chemical compounds (proteins) in food. They develop after you are exposed to a food protein that your body thinks is harmful. The first time you eat the food containing the protein, your immune system responds by creating specific disease-fighting antibodies (called immunoglobulin E or IgE). Salicylates are a group of plant chemicals found naturally in many fruits, vegetables, nuts, coffee, juices, beer and wine. Aspirin also is a compound of the salicylate family. What else besides diabetes would cause glucose to show up in urinalysis?

My doc used urinalysis to diagnose a urinary tract infection and she mentioned that glucose was also present. I will go back for blood tests. I do have a family history of diabetes. So I borrowed my father's glucose meter and tested my blood --glucose level was only 99, which is not in the diabetic range.

The kidney infection (in fact, ANY infection) WILL cause you blood sugars to be high, and THAT could have caused the sugar to spill into your urine,

This is NOT a problem -- UNLESS it continues after the kidney infection is healed.

You doctor will do ANOTHER urine test before you are "released" as being "well",. IF the sugar STILL shows up then, you have other problems to look into.  (+ info)

What to do about severe lactose intolerance?

I can't eat any milk/dairy products except yogurt. Sometimes even pastries make me sick because of the milk and butter in them. I try to avoid eating dairy but a LOT of food have hidden dairy in them. Also, those lactose intolerance tablets don't work for me at all.

Learn what foods have dairy in them that is hidden (most bakery items have at least butter). Read labels. Unfortunately, I don't think there's much you can do about it, other than avoid the foods that make you ill.  (+ info)

Can drinking milk when your lactose intolerance cause and damage other than a stomach ache?

I have had lactose intolerance for a long time. Recently I've noticed that the stomach aches and what not that comes when I drink milk doesn't bother me. However I want to know if the discomfort is causing any damage to my intestines or what not. Please let me know!

The bloating and upset feelings you get are caused by a lack of the enzyme lactate, which breaks down lactose (hense, lactose intolerance). When an unprocessed lactose is in your intestines, it will give a great zone for bacteria to grow and produce gas, which causes bloating. Milk in the lower intestine will also draw water out of your system and can cause dehydration and diarrhea. If you already know yourself to be lactose intolerant, check out some over the counter product enzyme supplements that you take with your meal, such as Lactaid. They can be found at your grocery store's medicine isle. However, if you still don't feel better after taking the supplement, you may have an allergy to a part of the milk and Lactaid will then not help.  (+ info)

What can cause trace glucose in a urinalysis?

The last two urinalysis test I have had show trace glucose.I am not diabetic.I have been on prednisone ,anywhere from 5mg to 60mg, for most of the year.Would this cause the trace glucose?

Im not sure if steroids can damage your kidneys, but if it does, that explains your trace glucose in your urine. it means that your glucose has not been reabsorbed in your kidney tubules...  (+ info)
