Does having Rituximab lower your immune system after having it?

Husband has Wegeners Granulomatosis
----------

Yes, Rituximab does lower one part of your immune system. The immune system has many components, and includes a cell type call leukocytes. The type of leukocyte that is affected by Ritximab are called B-cells. Rather than target the entire immune system, Rituxin targets just this one cell. You can read more about Rituximab, and get explanations to other questions here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rituximab#Autoimmune_diseases

Or by looking at the most recent New England Journal of Medicine, just out. It has two published studies regarding Rituximab VS Cytoxin used to treat ANCA related vasculits (Wegener's Granulomatosis)  (+ info)

can dogs detect autoimmune disease in humans?

I have Wegern's Granulomatosis, a rare, life-threatening, un-curable form of vascular disease, its also considered an autoimmune disease. Its treated with cytotoxic agents such as Cytoxan and/or Methotrexate and Prednisone
----------

No. Most dogs can sense a fair amount about their owner's emotional state, just like people can sense what other people are feeling, but they can't diagnoses diseases. Your dog would probably be able to tell if you're in pain (physical or emotional), but he wouldn't know that you have an autoimmune disease specifically.  (+ info)

Oral to Genital Spread of Herpes Type 1 (HSV-1) in Same Person?

Wikipedia and a few other souces state that "Antibodies that develop following an initial infection with a type of HSV prevents reinfection with the same virus type—a person with a history of orofacial infection caused by HSV-1 cannot contract herpes whitlow or a genital infection caused by HSV-1." Can anybody find a reliable source supporting this?
----------

I'm living proof that that info is wrong. I have oral herpes on my mouth and oral herpes on my genitals, it's not common but it does happen. Either type of herpes can affect the opposite location. If you "just contract" HSV1 in one location you can contract the same type again in another location. This is because there are not yet enough antibodies to fight off reinfection. It takes at least 3-6 months for antibodies to build up to fight off infection in another location.  (+ info)

Could anyone tell me what health condition this is? URGENT?

My friend has some health problems but her parents won't tell her what it is. All I know is that she might need to take out a kidney, that she coughs up blood (hemoptysis), has stomach and throat pains and is losing weight. I've looked up some stuff but still not sure what it is. Can anyone tell me? I found Lupus, Tuberculosis, Wegener's Granulomatosis, Goodpasture's Syndrome and heredity amyloidosis. Thanks
----------

There is no way for anyone to tell you what it is without any diagnostic tools, ie x rays, blood tests, and examination. Besides what you have found yourself there are probably over 1000 differential diagnosis for the symptoms that you wrote. I would suggest that she have a serious conversation with her parents about what's going on as she has a right to know. How old is she? She should be able to ask her doctor what is going on so that she can deal with it. I would tell her parents that she is really stressed out not knowing and that it is worse than knowing could ever be.  (+ info)

Do you know anyone who has Vasculitis ?

My dad was diagnosed with Wegeners granulomatosis vasculitis about 4 1/2 years ago at that time he was given 6mth to a year to live thankfully God has blessed us and he is still with us but he is still battleing this disease to this day he has never went into remission it took his kidneys shortly after his diagnosis and he has been on dialysis since it has moved into his lungs but so far they have been able to keep that part of it somewhat in control and we think it may have moved into his sinuses recently he has such a hard time with this disease and has pretty much been given a death sentence by the doctor twice once in the begining and again about a year later but he has kept fighting and is still here he is still on chemo but the last time when it was time to start chemo again the doctor was wanting to back off from it which is very scary i would like to hear others experience with this good or bad you dont have to spare me i already know its an ugly thing to deal with -thank you!!

People with Rheumatoid Arthritis have vascular disease, as in vasculitis, or inflammation of the vascular system. I have RA, so am prone to it, but to date am doing fine. Had a few blips with my kidneys, heart, lungs in the past but was able to control the problem. I am but 48 hoping to make 49, but am not looking forward to this problem. I expect your father will go through flare ups and remissions, but allow the Doc to make the decisions.  (+ info)

What are some serious?

Birth defects?

I have to do a paper & I need to know some.
I need like very serious defects. Not like orofacial clefts, heart defects and neural tube defects, im not saying that those aren't serious. because those can be fixed most of the time.

Im talking about like serious rare problems.

If you can send me the link or give me a little info about them that would be great.

Thankkk yoooouu. :)

teeth hurt, 3 root canals and 1 extraction later?

has anyone ever heard or been through this. the specialist tell me it is not my teeth hurting , and are sending me on to a orofacial pain clinic. everyone thinks I am nuts, ( friends , family, etc.) but I have been in pain for over 2 months now. has anyone ever heard of this, any advice?
----------

The Orofacial pain clinic is the best place for you to go. They have specialists there that can help you. I once went to a lecture given by one of the specialists there and he was fantastic. They do have people that complain of the same chronic pain. One of his examples was actually a lady who had pain in one tooth after another and ended up with root canals in all of her teeth. Guess what? It didn't stop her pain either. She did eventually have all of her teeth extracted because the pain just moved from one spot to another. It's great that your dentist has realized this might be a problem for you before you hit the same drastic conclusion. It might be in your head but it feels real enough to you.  (+ info)

TMJ question - jaw won't fully close?

My jaw hasn't fully closed for a week. I"m starting to get desperate. I've followed all the home therapies (ice, heat, advil, soft food, sleeping on recliner) and it's not getting better. I'm getting really scared and the orofacial specialist can't see me for 3 weeks. I contacted another one just in case but I haven't heard back yet.

The strange part is that in the morning, I can close it but it locks back in about an hour.
----------

OK..rather than wait three weeks call the hospitals in your area and ask if they have an oral surgeon on staff, if they do go to the ER and ask to see him...may take awhile for him to show up but at least you can get someones attention and get some level of care underway to deal with your jaw issue. Good luck and I wish you well.  (+ info)

Are flu Shots Safe: VERY CONCERNED!?!?

I was forced against my will to get the seasonal flu shot and h1n1 shot. Ive been getting seasonal flu shots against my will for 5 years. I heard tehy contain lead and mercury...I also have been taken fish oil pills for many many years....I am now very concerned about my mercury levels and am very very angry that people forced me to go against my gut instinct. I also have dystonia and orofacial dyskinisia because of forced psyhiatric medicine...Do I have to stop taking Fish Oil pills now?
Thanks
----------

The vaccinations that you receive nowadays are perfectly safe for the overwhelming vast majority of people. It usually only adversely affects people with preexisting conditions. The best site for INFORMED data on this is the website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
http://www.cdc.gov/Flu/protect/keyfacts.htm

I have read the various studies and have chosen to vaccinate my family including my children.

You are also fine with taking your Fish Oil capsules, they are quite good for you.

Take care, be well and stop worrying.  (+ info)
