I have had heal pain and have been diagnosed with a heel spur about 2 months ago. The pain is a bit worse.?


Thr pain has actually gotten worse. The doctor said I probably wont need surgery. I think it may be impossible not to need surgery seeing that the pain has worsened. Has anyone had a simmilar experience? Did surgery help or did successive shots of cortizone help?

A heel spur is a bony growth on the heel bone (calcaneus). Heel spurs can cause sharp foot pain at the bottom or front of the heel bone. Heel spurs and heel pain are caused by a condition called Plantar Fasciitis, which results from inflammation of the Plantar Fascia. The Plantar Fascia is the thick connective tissue that runs from your toes to the your heel bone and supports the arch of your foot. Continuous pulling of the fascia at the heel bone, eventually leads to the development of a bony growth on the heel, which is commonly called a Heel Spur.
Heel spurs are more likely to happen if:
- you suffer from over-pronation (flattening of the arch)
- you stand or walk on hard surfaces for long periods
- you are overweight or pregnant
- you have tight calf muscles
The most effective solution to heel spurs is to treat the cause of the problem by correcting abnormal foot mechanics with orthotic insoles.

how painful is heel spur & plantar fasciatis surgery?


I am having plantar surgery along with a shaving of heel spurs is it terribly painful?

If you do need surgery, it will most likely reduce your heel pain. Of the few people who require surgery, about 75 out of 100 have less pain than they did before surgery.

I think I have a heel spur. Should I stop taking calcium supplements?


A spur is calcium deposits--could using too much calcium be adding to my problem? I take a multi-vitamin every morning and a calcium tablet as I don't drink milk.

A spur is not actually a calcium deposit it is a bone in the foot from which a spur grows from a calcium deposit. taking less calcium at this point won't help. You need orthotics or arch supports you can buy in the store to try. I found a lot on this website.

My sister had surgery to have a heel spur removed 8 weeks ago, The surgery went well but she never listened to the Dr and stayed off her foot as long as the Dr said so she got an infection. What is a heel spur and ways to eliminate the problem?


A heel spur is a hard bony shelf as wide as the width of the heelbone caused by repeated pulling away of periosteum from the heelbone (calcaneous). The repeated stress or injury causes inflammation and calcification of tendons and ligaments in the foot.

The first step in the treatment of a heel spur is with short-term rest and controlling the inflammation. Here are the steps patients should take in order to cure their plantar fasciitis and heel spurs:
Rest
Avoiding the precipitating activity; for example, take a few day off jogging or prolonged standing/walking. Just resting usually helps to eliminate the most severe pain, and will allow the inflammation to begin to cool down.

Apply Ice Packs
Icing will help to diminish some of the symptoms and control the heel pain.Icing is especially helpful after an acute exacerbation of symptoms.

Exercises and Stretches
Exercises and stretches are designed to relax the tissues that surround the heel bone. Some simple exercises, performed in the morning and evening, often help patients feel better quickly.

Anti-Inflammatory Medications
Anti-inflammatory medications help to both control pain and decrease inflammation. Over-the-counter medications are usually sufficient, but prescription options are also available.

Shoe Inserts
Shoe inserts are often the key to successful treatment of plantar fasciitis. The shoe inserts often permit patients to continue their routine activities without pain.

Night Splints
Night splints are worn to keep the heel stretched out when you sleep. By doing so, the arch of the foot does not become contracted at night, and is hopefully not as painful in the morning.
These modalities alone will cure the plantar fasciitis pain in most patients. Be forewarned that the symptoms will not resolve quickly. Most patients find relief within about three months, and over 90% within one year.
If the pain does not resolve, an injection of cortisone can decrease the inflammation of plantar fasciitis. However, many physicians do not like to inject cortisone because there are potentially serious problems with cortisone injections in the heel area. The two problems that cause concern are fat pad atrophy and plantar fascial rupture. Both of these problems occur in a very small percentage of patients, but they can cause a worsening of heel pain symptoms.

A new treatment for heel spurs chronic plantar fasciitis is being investigated. This treatment, called extracorporeal shock wave therapy, or ESWT, uses energy pulses to induce microtrauma to the tissue around the heel spur. This microtrauma is thought to induce a tissue repair process by the body. ESWT is recommended in patients who have failed the previously mentioned treatments, and are considering surgical options. After successful treatment, how can I prevent heel spur pain from coming back?
To prevent the recurrence of heel spur symptoms after treatment, proper fitting footwear is essential. Many people use shoe inserts to relieve pressure over the tender area. Custom orthotics can also be made if there appears to be a problem with the mechanical structure of the foot. It is also important to continue the stretching and exercises. These simple exercises will help maintain the flexibility of the foot and prevent the plantar fasciitis pain from returning.
What if the symptoms of the heel spur do not resolve?
In a small number of cases (usually less than 5%), patients may not experience relief after trying the recommendations listed above. It is important that conservative treatments (such as those listed above) be performed for AT LEAST a year before considering surgery. Time is very important in curing the pain from heel spurs, and insufficient treatment before surgery may subject you to potential complications of the procedure. Because the diagnosis of heel spurs can be confused with tarsal tunnel syndrome (as described earlier), most surgeons advocate performing a tarsal tunnel release (or at least a partial tarsal tunnel release) along with the plantar fascia release. Can anyone tell me if this is a heel spur or not?


I have lots of pain in my heel when I flex and bend my ankle (like to walk). The pain sometimes extends up into my ankle. I am pretty sure it's a heel spur but I want some other opinions first b4 I go to the docs (mental preparedness I guess).

If the pain is primarily in the morning, especially when you first put your foot down on waking up, then it is most likely plantar fasciitis. It could also be a boil inside your foot, I had one client (I do reflexology) where we couldn't figure out what was wrong. Finally, he went to a podiatrist and they removed the internal boil. It was there for a long time too.

It does sound like a heel spur though. You can buy doughnut shaped pads for the heel area of your shoes at CVS, etc. If they help, most like it is a spur.

I've had a heel spur for the past two months. My doctor suggested excercise the foot, then use an ice pack


with my foot elevated, and finally he suggested some better shoes with arch support. Can anyone add to this advice?

Assuming he did an x-ray to see the spur, he is giving you the best advise short of surgery. If all those don't help you will need surgery, they will make a smal incison and smooth down the spur. You will be on crutches for a month or so then pain free later.  (+ info)
