Once an inguinal hernia is repaired is there a chance it can recur or is it closed off somehow?

Just wondering as our son had a hernia at 2 months of age in the left inguinal canal and now at 18 months he has herniated on the right side and has to have surgery again...Will this fix it so it doesnt recur or is their a chance for reccurance after its been repaired?
Thank you.

It seems that the baby is likely to get hernias, and being so young who can assure this will not happen again. I would ask the same doctor who operated on him what is the prognosis and what precautions could you take.

Best wishes.  (+ info)

What is a hernia and what can you do about it?

How active can you be if you think you have a hernia? For how long?

i had a double inguinal hernia..myth that women cannot get them is false!..mine was not too severe but surgery is the only way to repair them..they dont just go away!...at first it's intestinal fat oozing thru the abdominal wall (it feels like you squish a handful of lumpy jello thru your fist!)..if the hernia rips more, then your intestine is what 'leaks out the hole' and can become enstrangled which will require emergency surgery....

if you can 'push' and force the 'jello' thru the hernia, then you really should get it checked out before it becomes an emergency.

you'll be looking at 4-6 weeks off work/school and you'll have to be careful to not lift or strain in anyway..walking is about the only thing you will be allowed to perform and that will be hard to handle in itself!..trust me!....suggest your surgeon to insert mesh to prevent any future re-injury.  (+ info)

How long after hernia surgery to test sexual function?

How long did you wait after hernia sugery to test sexual function and did it hurt? Advantages or disadvantages of waiting?

Waiting really isn't an option. It is healty for you to wait at least 3 weeks after sometimes even 2 months to have actually start having sex. But I'm sure after about 2 weeks you could attempt to masturbate.  (+ info)

How long after hernia surgery till i can snowboard?

I had inguinal hernia surgery back in December and have planned a snowboarding trip for January. The surgeon said i would be fine to go snowboarding after four weeks which is when our trip starts, but i just want some other opinions.. Has anyone else been in this situation? What do you think?

4 - 6 weeks is pretty normal healing time.

Get it checked just before you go.  (+ info)

How long until i can masturbate after undescended and hernia surgery?

I had undescended testicle and hernia surgery about 5 days ago. I know i cant have sex for a while but i furgot to ask the doctor if i can masterbate. Can I masterbate yet?

Give it some time to heal since doing too much could be really bad news. Maybe you should just wait until you are cleared for regular sex. That is the safest option you have.  (+ info)

What type of exercises are okay for post inguinal hernia surgery for a woman?

I just had open hernia surgery 4 weeks ago and started biking and doing a few arm lifts at the gym. I know I am not supposed to do any abs, but what other exercises would be all right? I am 20 years old and a former college athlete.

It has only been healing for 4 weeks so I would be very careful doing exercises. You should consult your Dr about what exercises you can do, you don't want to have surgery again. It takes a good 6 to 8 weeks to heal after surgery.  (+ info)

How long does it take to recover from a hernia surgery?

I have to get surgery to have my hernia fixed. I've had it for about 2 years now. How long will I be out of work after I have the sergury and will I have to stay overnight at the hospital?

I had hernia surgery when I was about 12 years old and I was released that day after recovery.I had to be on liquid diet/soft foods the day of surgery. I couldn't walk without pain for about 3-5 days (as far as I remember). You may want to just take the week off. Then I was fine. No complications. It is rather routine surgery. Good Luck, everything will be fine.   (+ info)

What are the symptoms that a hernia will burst?

My dad is 42 and he has a hernia. What are the signs that a hernia will burst?

Hernias don't burst. They can strangulate, which is very dangerous, and requires immediate medical care. Here's a link to a site that explains all the different types of hernias and what to look out for:

I hope Dad does okay.  (+ info)

How long does it take for symptoms of a hernia to show up after the muscles are strained?

Also, can you get a hernia from holding your bladder too long?

It depends, but it can be instantly.
I doubt that holding your bladder would cause a hernia.  (+ info)

What is the best course of action for an Inguinal Hernia?

My husband has recently been diagnosed with an Inguinal Hernia. He is 43 and works in construction and believes it may have been caused by heavy lifting at work. It is extremely painful, particularly when he's standing. He has seen a doctor but he is wondering if anyone has had the same experience, if surgical procedure is the only option, what that entails and what the pros and cons of such a procedure are. Any other advice/tips would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
