What makes HIV a difficult antigen for the body to fight?

Unlike most viruses, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) first binds to the receptor sites on a T cell and then becomes engulfed by that T cell. Why does this characteristic make HIV difficult for the body to fight against?

It kills off ur fighting men. Ur immune system gets eventually defeated and u get attacked by silly little diseases like flu, rashes, rare diseases like karposis sarcoma then u just give up.
What the medication does is it improves ur immunity by maybe reducing the viral attack, or inhibiting some areas from being attacked, other people go to the extent of blood exchange, but that still does not wash it out.
Its a virus that encodes itself into ur DNA and makes its own copies that way. check out the website i attached.  (+ info)

What is so bad about having down syndrome?

I think people are a lot colder than they want you to believe. Too many pregnancies prediagnosed with down syndrome are terminated! Doctors tell people that their kid will be like some animal and people believe them. I've met my share of people with down syndrome, and they all seem pretty human to me. On top of that, they were all decent folks, which is a lot more than I can say for the general population. And how does knowing that unborn children are purged because of down syndrome affect those who were born and have down syndrome?

WOW!! I'm so glad that there are other people who's lives have been touched as mine has. See when I was 28 I gave birth to twin girls and one of them was born with Mosaic down syndrome. Of course, I didn't know much about it til now....and yes I was shocked. They are 14 months old now, and such a blessing as well as my two boys. My daughter is about 4 months behind in her milestones, but she is always so happy! Out of all my kids she is the easiest to handle.

It's always nice to have other people, who see that they are more alike, then different from the rest of us.  (+ info)

How do Hiv positive people deal with knowing they gave it to there girlfriends or others?

My girlfriend was diagnosed as hiv positive a week a ago. I tested negative 3 months ago and negative again last week. Well if I come back positive in a couple of months it confirms that I gave it to her. If you knew all the details you would know it was me too. Well what I want to know is how do you deal with knowing you gave Hiv to the person you love? I'm having a real hard time living with myself.

This is the type of problem that requires much more help than you can expect to get from a general-purpose group like YAHOO! Answers. There are dozens of good web sites specific for HIV counselling, where it can all be done anonymously. But in your case, I would highly recommend face to face counselling, whether it is anonymous or not. There are many very serious issues you are dealing with here, and it is critical that you get good solid advice from trained professionals. Starting here at YAHOO! Answers is not bad, but you need to go far beyond here, and not let you search for help end here. Please contact me by e-mail here and let me know you have found good help.  (+ info)

What is the syndrome called when you cannot feel physical pain?

I remember watching a show a long time ago, and this one little girl was born with a syndrome where she could never feel pain. If she fell on the floor and cut her knee, she wouldn't cry, whereas most children would.

What is this called? Is it a syndrome? Is it a medical condition? I just want to know what it's called, and I can do the research on it.

It is for a story I am writing but I don't entirely know what it is.

It's called "congenital insensitivity to pain"  (+ info)

What syndrome would someone have that the doctor would need to put them on bloodthinners?

My sister is 18 and just moved out here from MN to go to school. She has had many medical problems and been to several doctors. She recently told me that the doctor said there was something wrong with her blood and she needs to be put on blood thinners for the rest of her life. What syndrome could this be?

There are several, but the first that comes to mind is Factor-V (five).  (+ info)

What are the possibilities to transmit hiv thru the masturbation from message parlors?

Five days ago, I visited a massage parlor,The female massager , give me oil message all over my body and finally end up with a masturbation , I am worried if she had any HIV infection , I need to go for hiv checking or and any std check up . What are the possibilities to transmit HIV thru the masturbation from message parlors

If neither one of you had open sores anywhere, and she wasnt performing oral on you or anything like that, you should be safe. However, if you go to massage parlors, and worry about STD's from them, you probably should quit going to them. Go have yourself checked anyway just to be safe, and use a little better judgement on where you get your kicks from  (+ info)

How long does HIV usually take to kick in?

How long does it usually take before someone who has contracted aids "hiv" get side effects? What are some of the side effects? In this case, the person slept with someone who had got HIV, but it's been over 10 years.

Most people who have HIV, the virus that can lead to AIDS, have no symptoms for several years. Some people get flu symptoms within a few months after infection, but there is no way to tell the difference between flu symptoms caused by HIV and flu symptoms caused by flu.
Testing can detect antibodies to HIV within 3 to 6 months after someone gets infected. (More than 98% of people who have HIV would test positive within 3 months. Very rarely, it may take up to 6 months for someone to test positive.)

IMPORTANT: Within a day or 2 after someone is infected, they can pass the virus on to other people. This is long before symptoms would appear, and before they would test positive.

Also, HIV is not transmitted 100% of the time. Someone may be exposed to HIV several times and not get infected. However, it is also possible for someone to get infected by just ONE exposure.  (+ info)

How long after initial infection is HIV contagious but test results still show negative?

So the person might not even know they're HIV positive and able to spread it which sounds like a bad situation.

The window period is 3 months, until if the person has HIV, the test turns out positive. Therefore it's crucial to practice save sex during this period and always in any case. Re testing at 3 months is the final determinant  (+ info)

What is the chance of contracting hiv from protected anal sex and unprotected oral sex?

Last week, I had protected anal sex with another man. I also had unprotected oral sex. I am really worried about Hiv. Should i be concerned?

Obviously if the man in question is HIV negative, the chance of him giving you HIV is zero.

Both the activities you list are relatively low risk for transmission. There have been a couple rare cases of people acquiring HIV through only oral sex. In general unprotected oral sex is pretty safe as far as HIV goes. Current thinking is you'd almost have to have an open cut or sore in your mouth, since the mouth and stomach are extremely hostile places for invading viruses.

Protected anal sex is much safer than unprotected anal sex. If the man giving was HIV positive, there is still some risk, mostly with condom slippage or breakage. Assuming the condom remained intact, you shouldn't worry too much.

HIV testing is pretty cheap these days and less painful that giving blood. There's certainly no harm in you going in for testing just for peace of mind.  (+ info)
