what are the causes of normal pressure hydrocephalus?

The causes of hydrocephalus are not all well understood. Hydrocephalus may result from genetic inheritance (aqueductal stenosis) or developmental disorders such as those associated with neural tube defects including spina bifida and encephalocele. Other possible causes include complications of premature birth such as intraventricular hemorrhage, diseases such as meningitis, tumors, traumatic head injury, or subarachnoid hemorrhage blocking the exit from the ventricles to the cisterns and eliminating the cisterns themselves.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid that causes the ventricles in the brain to become enlarged with little or no increase in pressure. The name of this condition is misleading, however, because some patients have fluctuations of CSF pressure from high to normal to low. In most cases of NPH, it is not clear what causes the CSF pathways to become blocked.

Adult-onset normal pressure hydrocephalus describes those cases that occur in older adults (age 50 and older). The majority of the NPH population is 60 years or older.

The majority of cases of normal pressure hydrocephalus are idiopathic (meaning unknown cause). In some cases, NPH can develop as the result of a head injury, cranial surgery, subarachnoid hemorrhage, meningitis, tumor or cysts, as well as subdural hematomas, bleeding during surgery and other infections.  (+ info)

My mother was diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). They put a shunt in her brain to drain the excess fluid, but doesn't seem to be working. Has anyone else experience this problem and what was the outcome?

What is the normal blood pressure reading for a 13 year old?

My son is 13 and 5'8 and is 260lbs. He was told his blood pressure was hight at the time it was 170/80. He was put on enalapril..5 mg a day.... he has been on it for 4 days and tongiht his blood pressure read 173/85 what is the normal brood pressure for a 13 year old and why isn't it going down?
----------

I agree with the 110-120/70. Don't get stuck on the age thing, your son is tall for his age and morbidly obese for his age. One of the causes of your son's high BP could be his weight and that needs to be addressed immediately. As the doctor said above, there could be an endocrine problem and thus he should probably see an endocrinologist. Unless your little boy (and 13 seems awfully young to be having some drastic health issues such as this) wants a life full of medicines, doctor visits and health issues, he is going to need to get a little of this weight off as quickly as he can. I believe seeing an endocrinologist first to rule out any type of thyroid issues or growth hormone issues is paramount and then ask him to help work out a diet and exercise plan that your son can live with. As his weight comes down, his blood pressure will most likely normalize. Good luck to you both.  (+ info)

What could cause higher than normal systolic pressure in a young, non overweight female?

I tested my blood pressure on one of those machines at the grocery store pharmacies and my systolic was a few points above the normal range. My other pressure, the lower one was normal. I thought it was a fluke but I tested again on another day and got the same results. I'm 19, not overweight and have a pretty healthy lifestyle. Why is my blood pressure not normal? Thank you.
----------

Those machines at the pharmacy are not always that accurate. Take the results with a grain of salt. If you are concerned, talk with your physician.
Caffeine, exercise, etc can raise your blood pressure.  (+ info)

What is the normal blood pressure for me?

I know that normal blood pressre varies with age, height, and weight. Does anyone know any sites that would tell me what my specific blood pressure should be? I am 23 year old female, 5 feet tall and weighs about 115lbs. Any help would be appreciated!
----------

Normal blood pressure for full grown adults is about 120/80. If your's is a lot higher or lower, you can go to the doctor. He will take a reading and can tell you if your pressure is normal. Also, if it isn't, you're already at the doctor's, so you can begin treatment right away.  (+ info)

What is the normal blood pressure and pulse for a 17 year old girl?

I have a medical condition that requires me to take my blood pressure after laying down for 5 minuets and then take it again after standing for 2 minuets. What is the normal blood pressure and pulse for that? My example is laying down 111/67 with a pulse of 76 and then standing 126/76 with a pulse of 105. Is this normal for my pulse to jump like that?
----------

You have got "Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome".
Both blood pressure readings are normal. Optimal BP is less than 120/80 mmHg. Your systolic blood pressure (126 mmHg) is under prehypertension stage. But your pulse rate while in standing position is a bit high. Resting pulse rate should not exceed 100 beats per minute.  (+ info)

can a baby with an enlarged head due to hydrocephalus head ever go back to a normal size?

my daughter has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus im 28 weeks pregnant now... is it definite she will have an enlarged head and if she does can they ever get it to a normal size? i know about the shunt and everything but does the head ever become normal sized?

as long as a shunt is placed her head should be normal size. If it isn't then the shunt is malfunctioning and needs a revision.  (+ info)

How long before PIH blood pressure goes back to normal after birth?

I had pregnancy induced hypertension and had to deliver my baby girl at 35 wks. I'm on labetalol 3x a day now and my blood pressure still runs 160/105 unless I'm resting. My baby is a wk old tomorrow she was 5 lbs 12 oz so she got to come home with me thankfully I had the steroid shots so her breathing was normal. So how long should I expect to be on blood pressure meds?
----------

Blessing it is nice to know that mom and baby is at home safe and sound, some times people who has HB during pregnancy, couple of week after it will go away, and then it depends if it runs in your family, and also your life style. Try to take it easy, get some rest if you can also get some help with the baby from family and closed friends this will help some. Congratulation on your new arrival, have fun with your new-born. Peace.  (+ info)
