is liver abscess fatal?
my friend had liver abscess about 5 months ago. he got an operation done and was fine. but now he says he might have got it again. is having liver abscess for the second time fatal?
----------
The condition is very serious, even with treatment 10-30% of people die. The risk of death is higher in people who have many abscesses.
If the liver had time to heal and his infection is a new one your friend probably will make it, but I don't think that is the case....all you can do is hope for the best, but expect the worst.
Hope he recovers ! (

what is the current management of liver abscess? is IV antibiotic enough to treat large hepatic abscess?
Please find a gastroenterologist for an evaluation. I have heard of many people having to have more than IV antibiotic. But in some cases that is all that is needed. Get at least one if not two more opinions. (

What is a liver abscess?
An abscess is a collection of pus collected in a cavity formed by the tissue on the basis of an infectious process (usually caused by bacteria or parasites) or other foreign materials (e.g. splinters or bullet wounds). It is a defensive reaction of the tissue to prevent the spread of infectious materials to other parts of the body.
The organisms or foreign materials that gain access to a part of tissue kill the local cells, release toxins and trigger an inflammatory response by drawing huge amounts of white blood cells to the area and increasing the regional blood flow. So, pus is a collection of local dead tissue cells, white blood cells, infecting organisms or foreign material and toxins released by both organisms and blood cells. The final structure of the abscess is an abscess wall that is formed by the adjacent healthy cells in an attempt to build a barrier around the pus that limits the infected material from neighbouring structures.
Manifestations
The cardinal symptoms and signs of any kind of inflammatory process are redness, heat, swelling and pain. Abscesses may occur in any kind of solid tissue but most frequently on skin surface (where they may be superficial pustules (boils) or deep skin abscesses), in the lungs, brain, kidneys and tonsils. Major complications are spreading of the abscess material to adjacent or remote tissues and extensive regional tissue death (gangrene). Abscesses in most parts of the body rarely heal themselves, so prompt medical attention is indicated at the first suspicion of an abscess.
Treatment
The abscess should be inspected to identify if foreign objects are a cause, requiring surgical removal. Surgical drainage of the abscess (e.g. lancing) is usually indicated once the abscess has developed from a harder serous inflammation to a softer pus stage. As Staphylococcus aureus bacteria is a common cause, an anti-Staphylococcus antibiotic such as Flucloxacillin or dicloxacillin is used. It is important to note that antibiotic therapy alone without surgical drainage of the abscess is seldom effective.
In critical areas where surgery presents a high risk (such as the brain), surgery may be delayed or used as a last resort. The drainage of a lung abscess may be performed by positioning the patient in a way that enables the contents to be discharged via the respiratory tract. Warm compresses and elevation of the limb may be beneficial for skin abscess.
Perianal abscess
Perianal abscesses can be seen in patients with for example inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn's disease) or diabetes. Often the abscess will start as an internal wound caused by ulceration or hard stool. This wound typically becomes infected as a result of the normal presence of feces in the rectal area, and then develops into an abscess. This often presents itself as a lump of tissue near the anus which grows larger and more painful with the passage of time.
Like other abscesses, perianal abscesses may require prompt medical treatment, such as an incision and debridement or lancing. (

How will they remove a pyogenic granuloma??
I have a pyogenic granuloma on my leg. I just got a referral from my doctor today and will be going to the dermatologist sometime soon. He said that they will burn it off, but I am reading up on it and seeing many other ways to treat. I have a severe phobia of needles and the like, and I tend to have minor panic attacks before a shot or anything like that, and a low pain tolerance, and the entire thing is scaring me. What will they do and how much pain will I be in?
----------
Aka "proud flesh"
Depending on how big the lesion is and where it is, a variety of techniques could be used sucessfully. The dermatologist will know which one to use to achieve the best cosmetic look and to cause the least discomfort. Be sure to let the Dr. know about your fears. He/she can then be extra certain to make the whole thing as painless as possible.
I predict after this is all done, you will be asking, "Is that all there was to it?" Hardly worth worrying about now, right?
Good luck. (

How do I know when an abscess on my gum is healing?
I have an abscess that started on my gum and is slowly going backwards. The infection didn't start from a tooth (as the dentist's x-rays showed) and started from the surface of my gum. He prescribed me Penicillin and told me to check back in a week. Is the abscess still supposed to be turning white and draining throughout the whole week as it's healing or is that a sign the Penicillin is not working? Thanks!
----------
i would finish the penicillin course first and then see if the infectin goes away. During this time, i would keep the hygience in superb condition just to make sure the gum is healthy, assuming it's the gum problem not the tooth. (

How can i get rid of a dental abscess on my own?
I Have a dental abscess and went to the ER a week ago, they gave me antibiotics and sent me home. I have no insurace but found a dentist that will pull the tooth for cheap. However, they won't pull it with the abscess and i can't afford to go back to the ER and it's not going away. Is there any home remedies?
----------
I had the same problem. After a week of antibiotics most of the swelling went down but I still had a large bump under my jaw and the dentist went ahead and pulled the tooth and gave me some really strong antibitoics. Its completely gone now and it was only pulled 5 days ago.
Your best bet is to get it pulled after your first round of antibiotics. I was given Amoxicillin 500mg the first time and it didnt clear it all up until after it was pulled. (
