What are the chances of getting mercury poisoning from eating tuna fish?
I've heard you should only have tuna once or twice a week because you can get mercury poisoning from it.
If this is true why isn't it more talked about? Why isn't there a warning label on the can?
How much tuna can I eat safely?
----------
Tuna is a big fish so it contains more ppm of mercury than smaller fish. Once or twice a week should be OK.
Shark is sold in fish shops as flake and that contains the highest ppm of mercury of any fish and should be avoided.
Sword fish, king mackerel and tilefish are other fish that should be avoided. (

How much tuna would one have to eat to get mercury poisoning?
My mom says if I eat too much tuna I'll get mercury poisoning. Is this true, or a myth? I imagine you'd have to eat 100's of pounds of the stuff before you got sick.
----------
Well first off, tuna is a very healthy food. For you to get mercury poisoning you would have to eat more then your body weight in one sitting. You will get sick from the amount of food before you get from the mercury. Its just a wives tale your mom is probably just exaggerating. I say keep up with the sea food, its healthier then most other meats and with the omega-3 fatty acids they are super good for your health and heart. Hope this helped :) (

How much fish do you really need to eat to get mercury poisoning?
i am on a high protein diet and i eat 4 cans of tuna per day, just wanna know what the chances are of getting mercury poisoning. thanks.
----------
You would have to eat TONS of tuna to get mercury poisoning.
The trouble is, mercury is cumulative. it does NOT pass through your body, so each can of tuna you eat adds just a little more.
To help, change your diet from mostly tuna to mostly chicken. Same protein, less mercury. (

Is the limited amount of mercury in a thermometer enough to cause mercury poisoning?
My cat knocked over my thermometer which I believe is mercury filled while I was at work. The thermometer broke and the mercury is gone. Maybe my cat licked it up. Is the limited amount of mercury in a thermometer enough to cause mercury poisoning (in me or my cat) if breathed in or ingested?
----------
"The typical "fever thermometer" contains between 0.5 to 3 g (.3 to 1.7 dr) of elemental mercury.[1] Swallowing this amount of mercury would, it is said, pose little danger but the inhaling of the vapour could lead to health problems."
Make sure that the room the thermometer broke in is well ventilated and wear gloves to clean up the spill and wash your hands afterwards. Get the cat checked out by a vet if you are still concerned. (

is food poisoning less severe if you have a healthy immune system?
If you have a very healthy immune system, will the symptoms of food poisoning be minor? I realize that some food borne pathogens can be really dangerous and can make you very ill no matter how healthy you are, but for the most common ones, will food poisoning be nothing more than a bad stomach and diarrhea if you are very healthy? (I am emetophobic.) Also, do you HAVE to throw up if you have food poisoning. If you try to keep it down with ginger, antiemetics etc. , is that dangerous?
----------
Far less severe if you have a good immune system.
People with weak immune systems [including the elderly and very young] are frequently cautioned not to eat foods that are perfectly safe for most people, like runny egg yolks and meat that is at all pink.
But once you've eaten something that disagrees with you, let your body get rid of it quickly. Resisting the urge to vomit keeps the poison inside, and you really don't want that. (

how does the nervous system work with the respiratory system? How do they work together?
Does the respiratory system and the nervous system actually work together?
----------
The nervous system effects every single part of your body. The nervous system consists of every nerve tissue in the body. You have nerve tissue in your fingers to tell you when something is hot or cold, in your stomach to let the brain know to send the impulses that digest food, and in your lungs to tell you when to breathe and how much air to breathe in. There are 3 respiratory centers in the brain that control the respiratory rate.
There are stretch receptors in the lungs that tell the brain that the alveoli are completely expanded and that it is time to stop breathing. Your breathing also controls the acidity of the blood. If the blood gets too acidic, the brain tells you to breathe faster to release carbon dioxide. There are also receptors that tell you when to cough, sneeze, sigh (breathe in deeper), etc.
In addition to all of that, you have smooth muscle (involntary muscle) lining the respiratory tract. The nervous system tells the smooth muscle when to contract and when to dialate in response to various stimulation. There are many, many, many stimuli that cause responses - far too many to go over here. (

What do the integumetary and the nervous system have in common?
I am 12, and doing a project on human body matchmaking. It's srtof like, a dateing thing, ex.- the immune system likes to fight because it likes to fight off disease. So it would be perfect going with the integumentary, which is protective because it likes to protect the skin from anything that could hurt. I really cannot find anything that would make the integumentay and the nervous system go together. Or any qualitys that it could have. HELP!! I REALLY WANT A GOOD GRADEEE!
----------
Well, the integumentary system is the essentially the skin, which is the largest organ in the body, since it covers your entire body. The nervous system also covers the entire body, so it too is very large. They have that in common. (

What body system does brain tumor affect besides nervous system?
I have this project and I have to write an essay about a disorder. So I choose brain tumor. I know brain tumor affects the nervous system. I need to write what other system does it affect due to brain tumor and the damage of the nervous system? PLEASE HELP ME!!!! THANK YOU!!
----------
It depends on where the tumor is inside the brain, and whether it's benign or malignant. If it's malignant, it will probably cause the whole body to die unless you have it removed, and even then, it's likely to return. There are many different kinds of brain tumors, and I just mentioned two large categories of brain tumors. I would recommend looking at an anatomy drawing of the brain that's labeled with the functions that each part is primarily responsible for. For example, the pre-frontal cortex is responsible for planning, decision-making, maturity, advanced self-control and emotional self-control, learning from your experience, and inhibition of risk-taking. If you damage this section of the brain, you will have problems with one or more of those things. (

Does eating sushi more than once a week increase the chance of mercury poisoning?
I love to eat sushi, but I have heard horror stories of people that have eaten fish regularly and have suffered mercury poisoning because of it.
----------
It could. I have a patient who used to eat canned tuna almost everyday until he was diagnosed with mercury poisoning! One of the higher concentrations of mercury is found in tuna.
Explore other flavors and enjoy the fish in moderation. Unless you eat 20 or 30 pieces everytime you are enjoying your sushi, you should be fine. (
