Can gluteal atrophy due to prolonged bedrest be reversed easily with exercise?

So I have been bedridden for a good portion of the year due to health issues, and I have noticed that my buttocks have shrunk and look much different than before. I did some research and found it was due to gluteal atrophy which can be reversed with exercise. But I was wondering if anyone was aware how long it would take to reverse such a process and what exercises would be best? also could it be irreversible if you were bedridden for too long?

It really depends based on the amount of time you were bedridden and how fast your body loses muscle. Maybe a few months?

Your legs are probably weak as well, so work on doing bodyweight squats and lunges, which work both the legs and glutes.

If your not receiving therapy get your DR. to refer you. on your own you may do more harm than good.If the fracture was simple, not compound you shouldn't suffer much atrophy.You'll only be in cast for 6-8 weeks, If you've experienced healing probs. like slow or uneven regrowth along the break or any spurring you'll need pro. help.  (+ info)

What is the difference and use between a Muscle Stimulator and a Tens Unit?

I have torn my ACL and am going to PT. I do have atrophy in my left thigh. I would like to know the difference between the two and the benifits. I would like some recommondations on a good and reasonable Muscle Stimulator and Tens Unit. Thanks

I'm not familiar with the term "Muscle stimulator", but I assume it's the same thing as NMES (neuro muscular electrical stimulation). This type of e-stim is designed to improve muscle strength, the strength of the current is turned up to the point that your muscle actually contracts.

Tens units are more for pain relief. You're not supposed to get a muscle contraction with TENS, just a tingling sensation.

Typically after ACL injuries, NMES is used to strengthen the quad muscles. Tens units can be used on the actual knee for pain relief and to help decrease swelling. When you go to PT, if they feel you need a unit to take home, they will give you information on them.   (+ info)

It very much depends on the tumour and its location, but weight loss occurs in the aftermaths of most serious cancer surgery. Brains are particularly complicated, and surgery there can cause a variety of problems. Reduced control over a part of the body, impaired cognitive functions, fatigue, death, you name it. Of course, there are also cases where people emerge as if nothing had happened.

How do I get my muscles back working again?

I was sick with Flu/Cold/Bronchitis/Asthma/Pneumonia for 7 days. I was in bed. Only got up to take the kids to school and force feed myself. I am better now, taking Prednisone. No antibiotics. I want to have my energy back again. What can I do to get it back? I've been getting soooooo tired just cooking for the kids. My muscles have nearly atrophied. (sp) Help me.

Exercise by taking walks or jogging outside and getting some fresh air. Other stuff you can do inside is push ups and sit ups, moving around, dancing to music. any kind of work out will make you feel better  (+ info)

What can I do about the scar from my corticosteroid injection?

Last summer, I had a terrible case of poison ivy. I went to a prompt care center for treatment whereupon the doctor gave me a corticosteroid shot in the buttocks. Now, I have a depression in the skin about the size of a quarter in diameter and approximately 1/2" deep. My internet research tells me it is "subcutaneous atrophy." It is making me feel very self-conscious when I am with my husband. Is there anything I can do about it? I read something about saline injections clearing it up, but I'm not sure if that applies to this situation. Is it something that will go away with time? Any advice from doctors or others with this experience is appreciated.

How long do you have to be down in bed before the body muscles begins to atrophied?

Depends on your muscle mass. Bedrest would have to be prolonged without any rising from the bed. From my observation of my patients before, their muscles would atrophy at around 1 week at the earliest, especially if they have had a stroke or a myocardial infarct. The longest I've seen is around 3-4 weeks before atrophy set in, and that was because the patient was having muscle problems but had good muscle tone prior to her confinement (she was a powerlifter in training).  (+ info)

How is it that so many people are answering questions on steroid use saying that it shrinks your penis?

I hate to tell all of you but you're all quite wrong.It actually can make it bigger.It shrinks only the testicles due to atrophy from lack of testosterone production.They are still a bad call however.But for all of you people that have answered questions like this you are 100 percent mistaken.Sorry.I have not or will not ever use anabolic or androgenic steroids but I know many people who have.
The rise in testosterone causes the body to stop releasing lutenizing hormone so the testicles become dormant.Testosterone increases muscle size and the penis is comprised of mostly muscle like tisue.You figure it out.So please stop giving people information that you cannot back up with science.Try just telling people not to use them because of cancer risk or gynecomastia (bitch tits)risk.Any other information is superfluous.

Could it be that since very few people here are actually Doctors or researchers in the fields that they are answering that they are full of Sh!t??? Yeah, I think so!!!!
