Post Concussion Syndrome?

Recently diagnosed with Post Concussion Syndrome, I awoke tonight from a nap in a cold sweat not knowing who/where I was. Within three minutes my memory came back. An hour later my face started burning up and turned bright red. My memory has been a little off lately. The original concussion took place on March 14th. Is what happened tonight normal? Im kind of nervous.

you answered mine so now im answering yours:

honestly i have never heard of post concussion syndrome. However, I have vasovagal syncope..which is like a fainting disorder. Sometimes I faint..randomly and it sounds similar to your syndrome. When I faint I get really dizzy..and faint. I wake up.. in a cold sweat..and i never know where I am or what happened. It only takes me a few minutes to put it all together. I turn red and burn up the few hours after it happens... but my memory hasnt been effected. I would say everything is normal but the memory loss?..you must have hit your head very hard!.. I would def call your doctor..Hope everything is ok!  (+ info)

post concussion syndrome?

what exactly is post concussion syndrome? and does it leave after effects ? how long does it take to heal
----------

You can have symptoms of vertigo, dizziness, forgetfulness, irritable moods, quick temper, headaches, panic attacks, anxiety, and confusion. Depending on the part of the brain affected, it can last from a few weeks to a few years. Was this related to an automobile accident?  (+ info)

Post-concussion syndrome?

About 8 months ago i got a mild concussion from falling off a trampoline and went to the doctor, he said everything was fine. About 2 hours ago i got hit in the head with a basketball and been having symptoms of a concussion. Is this post-concussion syndrome or does that only happen within the three months of having one?
----------

You probably just have another concussion because post concussion syndrome generally occurs directly after a concussion and does not require a second impact. Signs and symptoms of post concussion syndrome include irritability, giddiness, fatigue, lack of concentration, impaired memory, visual disturbances, and anxiety following a concussion and the symptoms may last for a while.  (+ info)

Post-Concussion Syndrome?

How long does post-concussion syndrome last? What do you feel like if you have PCS?

I was rear-ended 2 months ago and had whiplash/a slight concussion without passing out.

I really am not trying to be those overdramatic people with whiplash, but my head REALLY hurts sometimes. Sometimes I feel slightly off balance, light hurts my eyes, and my ears are ringing. I'm a teen, so I should have healed quickly. Do I even have PCS?

I went to the doctor, and there's not much I can do. So, how long will it take to wait this out? Is there anything I can do to not feel so weird?

Post concussion syndrome?

I am 14 and I got a concussion playing soccer. I was dizzy, lightheaded, had blurred vision and had a lot of headaches. That was 7 weeks ago. My symptoms went away after about a week or so, and then I waited another two weeks before returning to soccer. When I came back I may have had a couple small bumps on the head, but nothing major. I started getting headaches again while playing, so I went to another doctor. He told me I had to sit out again. That was about 3 or 4 weeks ago. I have been going back every week, but nothing seems to be improving. I think it might even be getting worse again. I haven't gotten any more blurred vision, but now I think I'm having memory problems and trouble concentrating, in addition to headaches and lightheadedness. The doctors may take and MRI or whatever this week, but they don't expect to see anything. They said they are looking for any preexisting conditions. What could these be. Also, I've heard that sometimes postconcussion syndrome can last months or even years. Does it sound like I have it? If it lasts for months, do I have to wait that long to return to playing sports? Soccer is my life, and right now I'm not even allowed to run to stay in shape for when I return. If you know, what are some things I can do to at least keep my ball skills until I can return? If I'm not running, can I stand and play with a soccer ball?

Also, why do I get the feeling that everyone thinks I'm faking, because my neuro exams are normal? I want to return to soccer, why would I fake this.
Could it really be that I won't ever be able to play contacts sports again? Even if my symptoms clear up, should I not play again?
----------

I agree with your neurologist's conservative approach. We used to be fairly cavalier about concussions. But we now know that they represent an injury - often a sever injury - to the brain. It is not generally visible because there is no swelling or cell death associated with it. Rather than occurring on a large scale, the injury is to the individual nerve cells. These cells are too small to see on a scan. But repetitive injuries can gradually lead to the death of these cells and thus, permanent long-standing impairments. There are a number of pro football players who have had to quit because of recurrent concussions. They suffer from chronic headaches and, in some cases, memory loss and difficulty in performing complex cognitive tasks.

Here's the really inportant fact. You are young and so your brain has not fully developed. Thus, you are more susceptible to this kind of injury. Also, your symptomes have persisted for a long time. THAT ONE FACT AUTOMATICALLY PLACES YOU IN THE HIGHEST RISK CATEGORY. Not only that, but that means that you are significantly more likely to suffer subsequent concussions. Contact sports may not ever be appropriate for you. I have two links for you:

Is it okay to return to full contact football with Post Concussion Syndrome?

I suffered a concussion about 3 and a half weeks ago. I didn't think much of it as I didn't lose consciousness. My doctor believes I may be suffering from Post Concussion Syndrome since I have had brutal head aches and changes in sleeping patterns the last couple weeks. What are the risks of continuing full contact football? I have played since the concussion but the head aches have gotten worse. My Cat scan showed everything looking okay. Should I continue playing?
----------

Absolutely Not!!!!!

Once you have suffered 1 concussion the likelihood of suffering more goes up statistically. Also if you are suffering post concussion syndrome your body is not back to normal yet. Most people get over post concussion syndrome in 6 months. Of that group, most get better in month 1.

However, I am suffering from it 5 years later. I can't drive, watch tv, watch movies, watch the snow fall, I have auditory processing problems, my system goes overboard with load noises, it is hard for me to control my temper, I stutter (if I forget my medicine), I have memory and concentration problems, I get headaches everyday, migraines 3 times per week, nausea,I can't be in a crowd of people, I can't listen to music, play the piano, sing etc. Basically my life is in a bubble. Do what they say so you can get better as quickly as you can and not end up as a statistical anomaly. You want to be able to LIVE your life.

With PCS you are not as likely to be making good decisions that would include being able to make good choices out on the field. I bet if you asked your doctor about football they would say not yet. Perhaps you are asking here because you want to hear someone else say yes.

I see a lot of people giving advice here about concussions when they were kids or treating it very lightly. That frustrates me because although most people get over them quickly, some people don't. And they totally eliminate that group when giving answers. But since you have moved on to PCS, you need to treat it seriously and do everything the doctors tell you to do to get rid of it.

Good luck and don't mess with your future!!!!  (+ info)

post-concussion syndrome?

i read about PCS and it keeps saying the symptoms go away within months at the most, i hit my head on the ground after crashing on a four wheeler 10 years ago. is it possible i can still be experiencing symptoms of PCS after 10 years? i am trying to figure out what the cause of my symptoms are.
----------

No. It's more likely you have minor brain damage, or other membrane damage in your head. You should see your doctor.  (+ info)

Does anyone know any good exercises that I can do if I have post concussion syndrome?

I got a concussion in october and I now have post concussion syndrome. I need to start getting back in shape for soccer season so I am ready to play when I can. My doctor said don't do a lot, but I'm at the point where I need to start moving again. Any suggestions what to do?
----------

Ask the Dr to send you to physical therapist. Don't do a lot is not a big help.  (+ info)

How long can post-concussion syndrome last?

A good friend of mine said she had had a concussion a few years ago after slamming her head into a pole. Now, she still has trouble concentrating and remembering details. She can't read a book if it takes more than one sitting. She has no interest in her old hobbies. These symptoms have persisted from the time of the concussion. Is it post-concussion syndrome, or is it something else?
----------

Prognosis
For most patients, post concussion symptoms go away within a few days to several weeks after the original injury occurs.[In others, symptoms may remain for three to six months. In a small percentage of patients, symptoms may persist for years or may be permanent. If symptoms are not resolved by one year, they are likely to be permanent (though some people report improvements after even 2 or 3 years time). However, the prognosis for PCS is generally considered excellent, with total resolution of symptoms in the large majority of cases.

If a patient receives another blow to the head after a concussion but before concussion symptoms have gone away, there is a slight risk that he or she will develop the very rare but deadly Second Impact  (+ info)

Any one out there ever had post concussion syndrome? How long did it last and how did you treat it?I had a?

Any one out there ever had post concussional syndrome? How long did it last and how did you treat it?
I had a car accident and since then I have had non-stop headachs and get very dizzy all the time, which leads sometimes into seziure type of behavior, sometimes I loose consienceness sometimes I don't. My hearing and sight also are impacted when I have an eposode and my pain level goes to a 10 immediately. Life has pretty much sucked since this accident, I can't even drive anymore.......Now they are also telling me I am showing early signs of something called RSD, a nerve disorder.

Anyone have any experence with this syndrome, or RSD?
----------

Uhhh, no idea.

I read that it could last weeks or months. But you are not alone. I got head-butted by a 2 year old 4 weeks ago today, and my symptoms (double vision and vertigo) didn't even begin until 1 week (10 days) after the incident. But I think that I am slowly improving. The double vision is slightly better (corrected with glasses) and the vertigo is either subsiding or I am getting used to it. What I am doing is keeping notes of appointments, to-do lists, and getting more sleep than usual. Look for little improvements if you can, that has been the only ray of sunshine in my life. Things like:

• Hey I only hear ringing in one ear.
• The dbl-vision isnt as bad if I look up at things.
• Hey no vertigo yet today, right now, or only two spells of it yesterday.
• Numbness, and confusion are about the only constant that I am suffering.

Hang in there, and look for the improvements.

I would definitely see a neuro if I were you, about the seizures.  (+ info)
