How is proteinuria harmful?

proteinuria means that there is higher protein concentration in urine than normal (large amounts of protein in the urine) , that indicates that there is a problem with your kidney function and specifically glomerular disease..

1-Glomerulonephritis(the inflammation of the membrane tissue in the kidney that serves as a filter, separating wastes and extra fluid from the blood.)
2-Glomerulosclerosis ( the scarring or hardening of the tiny blood vessels within the kidney.)
Although glomerulonephritis and glomerulosclerosis have different causes, they can both lead to kidney failure.

Kidney disease (proteinuria and glucosuria)?

I know that the urine of healthy persons does not contain proteins or glucose. How come proteinuria is a sign of kidney disease, while glucosuria is not?

protein is a larger molecule and if it is escaping the kidneys then there is damage to the nephrons, if glucose is smaller and does not have to indicate kidney damage, also proteinuria may be present in the first morning urination of adolescents without indicating kidney damage.  (+ info)

I'm 37 weeks pregnant and dx with proteinuria. My question is, is protein bars and protein shakes bad for me

Mention it to your doctor. Sometimes if someone has protein in their urine they will put them on a low-protein diet. Pregnancy complicates it because you and the baby need the extra protein. This far along the baby is already formed and is just adding the final touches (like lung development). Generally, you get all the protein you need anyways through your diet. Unless it's extremely lacking, or the dr recommends the shakes and bars, it's probably not necessary to consume them.

I know you're dr is probably monitoring it, but sometimes protein in the urine is a sign of preeclampsia. Make sure you keep all of your appointments so they can keep an eye on you!  (+ info)

Am I at risk for proteinuria?

When I was about 4 or so I was really underweight so I was put on a high protein diet. I am 16 now. As a regular doctor checkup, I peed in a cup bla bla bla and they tested it and found abnormal amounts of protein in the urine. Should I be concerned?

When I was about 18, I went for a job interview, and a medical was required at that time, and I too had protein in my urine. A subsequent test showed it was OK. What did the Doctor say as part of the medical. Surely if he was concerned he would have sent you for further tests, so if he didn't sweat it, I wouldn't either  (+ info)
