What is the best way to relieve severe back pain that is related to Scoliosis with over the counter medicine?

Right now i am looking for any medicine or over the counter cocktail that I can take to relieve severe back-pain that is related to my Scoliosis? I like so many others do not have health insurance and do not want to go the illegal route. The weather here in KC makes it the pain unbearable and today I am just looking for anything. The ibuprofen that I am taking is barely doing anything? Any suggestions out there?
----------

Having had scoliosis for many years, I know how you feel. I live in MI and yes, this cold, damp weather does NOT help. I have found heating pads very helpful, especially wet heat, as well as lying down as much as possible. As far as any over-the-counter meds, try the Bayer back pain one. It has aspirin instead of ibuprofen and may help. I hope you have good support at home and can just lie in bed, with the heating pad, and let yourself feel better.  (+ info)

What type of swimsuit should I wear to disguise scoliosis?

My right hip juts out noticeably more than the other because of my scoliosis - what type of bathing suit will disguise this or detract attention from my asymmetrical hips? Thanks!
----------

I had this before my operation! What I would do is try to buy a bikini, with the bottoms of the bikini being ruffled at the top ( a top trend this season!) around the hip area and this will detract the attention away from your curve. Try not to go for block colour, a funky print will also catch people's attention, but will veer it away from your hips!

How long does it take to fully recover from scoliosis surgery?

I'm scheduled to have scoliosis surgery the second week of june. I need to know how long it's going to take me to recover because I'm hoping to still compete in marching band in the summer.
I'm scheduled to have scoliosis surgery the second week of june. I need to know how long it's going to take me to recover because I'm hoping to still compete in marching band in the summer. It's a 54 degree curve in my mid back that goes out from the center, to the left, and then back to the center.
----------

I had surgery in April 2009 and my curve was just like yours. I think as long as your instrument is very heavy you should be able to do it. It really just depends on how long the practices are and how physically demanding they are. You will be able to walk the day after surgery, so I would assume that marching would be one of the activities that you should be able to do about two or three weeks after surgery.

Good luck with surgery, I hope this helps.  (+ info)

What type of shoulder exercise can I do without further aggravating my scoliosis?

I just recently found out I have mild scoliosis. I notice that when I do arm raise of 30LBS for my shoulders, my backbone arcs going into the 2nd and 3rd set because it really is heavy. This can be dangerous I realized. Is there any other way I can develop my shoulder muscles? Additionally what safe back muscle exercise can I do? I only use dumbells at home. Even doing tricep exercise like lifting the dumbell from my back to the top of my head has become a concern if it'll affect my scoliosis.
----------

well the first consideration is the degree of scoliosis which can be determined best with xrays. Secondly, you can talk to a physical therapist in this regards, through your doctor if needed, to see which exercises are better. This is beyond the stage of getting recommendtions from people who exercise or who coach gyms, good luck  (+ info)

What are some alternative ways to treat scoliosis ?

Do anybody know if there are any alternative ways to treat scoliosis ? Because i have scoliosis or ciaphosis that makes my back look really ugly and i want to know if there'a any other way to fix this other than surgery ??
----------

If you are young and still developing, they have a brace you can wear. It is basically the same thing as braces on your teeth, but for your back. It slowly straightens your spin out, but it takes a long time. If you are fully grown then surgery is your only option. I am sure some chiropractor might tell you they can manipulate your spine into alignment. This is ridiculous and very dangerous.

I won't lie to you, the surgery is not fun. They place rods into your back and you can hardly move for weeks after the surgery. For three months you are not allowed to bend over or carry anything remotely heavy. Surgery is the best option for severe cases of scoliosis where the curvature could cause future health problems. In your case, it is not worth going through all the trouble just for aesthetic reasons. I do not know exactly how severe your curvature is, so I recommend going to an orthopedist that specials in scoliosis.

Don't worry about the way it looks. Something like 5-10% of people have scoliosis to some degree. I have a mild case and my girlfriend has a more severe case. Even hers is hard to notice. Goodluck with your decision.  (+ info)

Does having scoliosis cause a person to not be able to do push ups?

I have scoliosis (my spine curves, instead of being straight like your spine is suppose to), and I can't do push ups. When I try to, a really sharp pain is sent up through my spine. So I'm wondering if it's because I have scoliosis. Anyone have any answers on it?
----------

I have scoliosis too, my largest curve is 37 degrees, but I've ALWAYS found it difficult to do push ups so I'm not really one to answer your question. However, if you go on www.spinekids.com, you should find an answer. Go into 'message exchange'

What is the difference between scoliosis and spondylothesis?

A few years ago I was having terrible back pain - more then usual. My husband and mom talked me into visiting a chiropractor and he took x-rays and said I have sponylothesis. The x-rays showed my lower spine curved to the left and in that curve there were two vertibres that were out of alignment, the top one wash out in front of the bottom one by about 1/4".

He said I was born that way and it would just get worse as I age. He also said there was nothing he could do about it.

He was right. For the past 4 years I have been sleeping on the couch because the bed makes my back hurt. And I can only do about an hours worth of housework at a time. Also I have gotten to where I can only stand for about 5 minutes then my back starts to hurt. I then have to lean against something or sit down.

Basically, I want to know what the difference between scoliosis and spondylothesis is.

Thanks!
----------

Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine. It's very common and though it can cause some back aches is mostly very manageable by keeping your abs strong thru sit ups, etc. and keeping your weight down.
Spondylolistheis is where one vertebrae (bone in your back) slides up or forward on the one that should be above it and it's fairly unusual.
You need to go to an orthopedic dr or a sports medicine dr. While there is not much a chiropractor can do, you need to get a complete idea about what is wrong w/ your back b/c there is a lot you can do about it.  (+ info)

What is the cost of scoliosis surgery in India?

I did the scoliosis spinal fusion surgery. Now I would like to remove the instrumentation but it is too expensive in my country. I am thinking that I could possibly go to India to do it and I would like to find out the cost. However I have not been able to find out from searching the net. Does anyone know?
----------

I'm pretty sure it varies from hospital to hospital and depends on your case. Call or meet with a doctor to get a price range.

You can have the instrumentation removed minimally invasive if you wish, but you would have to travel to the US. I'm not sure where you live so I don't know if that would be too far for you. Here's the link for more info on that if you're interested http://www.laserspineinstitute.com/c/
Good Luck I hope all goes well  (+ info)
