After vomiting a lot, is it better to try and eat something than to risk painful dry heaves?

To expand a little bit: when someone has vomited a few times and they have a basically empty stomach, is it better for them to eat something which would likely cause more vomiting, than risk much more painful dry heaving?

And just to clarify, I am not, nor is anyone around me vomiting, I was just curious!

Food will likely just irritate the stomach lining and cause more vomiting. The best thing to do is drink fluids (water and something that will restore electrolytic balance...like Gatorade or PowerAde). The biggest problem with vomiting is the tendency towards dehydration. It's important to keep hydrated...and makes the "heaves" less painful.  (+ info)

What is the best recommended medicine for fever and vomiting?

What is the best recommended over the counter medicine for fever and vomiting? Does anyone know?

That can be tricky, since some medications, like Advil, or other Ibuprophen drugs can upset people's stomachs. Tylenol is usually OK, it does not cause nausea or stomach problems in as many people. Aspirin or Ibuprophen are harder on the stomach.

Peptol- Bismol or something like that can help the nausea, but the most important thing is to try and keep fluids down. Not so much that it comes right back up, but a little at a time, like sips of water, warm tea (non-caffeinated if possible) or ice chips. Liquids and as any woman who has been pregnant knows, sometimes saltines or other crackers can help get a little food down.

Peptol Bismol has some aspirin in it (not a lot), so be careful if someone is sensitive or allergic to aspirin or has taken aspirin for pain or fever. For diarrhea you can also take Peptol-Bismol or Immodium AD. It can make you a little constipated after you take it, after the diarrhea stops.   (+ info)

How do I prevent myself with vomiting?

I have a fear of vomiting but i really want a remedy to prevent it. Its the only thing i hate about life just vomiting. Their saying that sports drinks such as gatorade & powerrade can help. So is this true or just a lie? So any suggestions?

Ginger Ale and crackers are some things to eat to settle the stomach. I'd suggest lying down too if you feel nauseous.  (+ info)

How can I stop myself from vomiting so often?

I am really sick today - I keep on vomiting every 3 hours and haven't eaten for over 24 hours because whenever I eat or drink anything I just vomit it all back up. It's really annoying! Please tell me if there is any way I can stop it?

don't bother to eat anything. If your stomach doesn't want solids, why keep giving it solids.
Liquid on the other hand you need.
Rather than drinking anything, try chewing on ice chips or eating a popscicle. Sometimes the cold will stop the stomach cramping and you are still getting liquids but at a very slow rate, which also sometimes sooths that tummy.
You must allow the virus to run its course. You won't die from lack of food but you will suffer from lack of liquids, hence the ice chips and popscicle.
Your stomachs natural reaction to any toxins or something that doesn't agree with it is to get rid of it fast. A normal reaction. Allow it time to do its job.
My grandmother had an old fashioned doctor that still did house visits who always recommended a huge glass of icy cold water drank rapidly right after barfing. He said it shocked the stomach into stopping the cramping that made a person puke to start with and also rinsed out the stomach if you did puke again afterward. Also gave your stomach something to throw up so a person didn't also have the dry heaves, which really suck.
It does sort of work. I have never known anyone to puke more than once or twice after that. Its worth a try.  (+ info)

How long does vomiting last in a 20month old?

My son started diarrhea on Saturday Sunday morning same with vomiting. Diarrhea slowed down vomiting continues? When should I be concerned to take him o the doctor? I feel bad because he wants to eat but when he does he vomits again. I feel so bad :(

It is now early Thurs morning. Any vomitting that lasts more than 12-24 hours (depending upon frequency) should be addressed by a Doctor. The danger is from dehydration. Children and the elderly are at the greatest risk. Until you can get professional help, allow only ice chips, or clear liquids only as tolerated.  (+ info)

How do you loosen throat mucus without vomiting?

I'm sick right now and I have a lot of throat congestion. My biggest problem is that I have a gag reflex like no other. I can cough it up easy, but as soon I as I feel it go up I start vomiting.
Is there a way I can get rid of it without having to vomit?

The symptoms that you are having are due to post nasal drip. Post-nasal drip (PND) occurs when excessive mucus is produced by the sinuses. The excess mucus accumulates in the throat or back of the nose.

Take plenty of fluids throughout the day and inhale steam as many times as possible. . Inhaling steam from a bowl of hot (but not boiling water) may help to soften, and loosen, the build up of mucus in your nose. You may also find that adding some menthol crystals, or eucalyptus oil, to the water, helps to ease your symptoms of catarrh.

use an over-the-counter (OTC) decongestant combined with an anti-inflammatory analgesic (pain reliever) like Ibuprofen. However, you should not use decongestants for more than 5-7 days at a time. You can also OTC antihistaminics like benadryl or zyrtec for some days and see if they provide relief or not. Some chronic cases may need oral steroids or steroid nasal sprays and antibiotics. These can be taken only after prescription.

I hope it helps.Take care and regards.  (+ info)
