How is a dental fistula occuring after apical resection treated? By what specialty?

Had apical resection, 2 years ago. Since that time I have gum pain right above my 2nd premolar. When I rub my finger on my gum in that area there is a very small, tiny, hard area. I do not see any drainage from that spot. I have shown it to my dentist and he has taken some films and says it is scar tissue. But the pain and pressure continue periodically -- not always. Thanks

A periodontist would be the person to treat this.  (+ info)

Anyone with severe side effects after radioactive seed implants 4 prostate cancer like vesiculorectal fistula?

My father was overtreated with radiation for prostate cancer and has suffered some serious side effects. The latest is a large defect in the inner wall of the rectum which connects to the bladder and continuously drains urine. Anyone with similar problems of urinary incontinence and or suggestions?
This is a sensitive issue, please be empathetic.

5 years ago I had seed implants for prostate cancer and only someone like you or your dad would believe the side effects I have experienced! There are doctors that occaisionally visit this site and they will be quick to say that the medical literature doesn't support my blaming the seeds and the follow-up external beam radiation I was treated with for these side effects, HOWEVER: Before my treatments NONE of these conditions existed and withing 6 months of the treatments I developed:
1. A weight gain of over 70 pounds which I think was caused by the severe edema in both legs and feet I developed after the seed implants, which in turn may have caused -

2 Very painful neuropathy in both legs and feet AND:

3. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) in both legs with a clot that made it to my lung (pulmonary embolism)

4. Total incontinence ( I can't start it, stop it and I never know when I am going to excrete urine, so I wear Depends 24/7) and have a permanent supra pubic catheter with collection bag (3 years now).

The weight gain which I have been able to shed only 40 pounds of, I believe led to my diagnosis of type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetes several months ago.

The weight gain also exacerbated my already existing arthritis in my knees and lower back plus the pubic catheter gives me a permanent "catheter infection" making surgery on my knees a no can do according to the orthopaedic surgeon.

The prostate never healed after the initial radiation procedures and the several subsequent procedures that were undertaken to try to fix the damage may have made the problems worse. I have sometimes scary episodes of blood in the catheter. There is also the discomfort of the :diapers" and the at least once every six weeks changing of the catheter.

End result of all this? I am rated 100% disabled and use a wheel chair. When the cancer was diagnosed I was phsyically able to do most anything within reason for a 60 year old.

My brother, who is 5 years older than me, had the same treatments performed at Johns Hopkins in Maryland and he is playing golf, walking 18 holes, three or four time a week!

Life is still good and I am doing my darndest to keep going. I have two new grand kids and a wonderful bunch of caring family and friends that make life worth while. But I have to admit, I never would have dreamed 5 years ago that I would be so excited about having a wheel chair lift mounted on the back of my car!

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your dad. I know some of what you are going through and I sincerely hope you both are getting through it. It sounds to me as if your dad and me have two very important things in common - we are both still alive and we both have caring family.

This was very long and I hope there aren't too many errors.  (+ info)

I recently was diagnosed with a strep A infection in the bladder and formed a fistula through to the vagina. ?

I did not take most of the antibiotics provided and when I went back in for a urinalysis it came back negative, but now the symptoms have returned along with chest pressure, difficulty breathing, and what feels like a painful right lung. Could the strep A infection have spread to my lungs?

What is fistula? I have googled it and seen some what of what it is. Just wondering what causes it? ?

I have pcos and chrones and a form of lupus which one of these will cause this? and what are the signs?
----------

A fistula is an abnormal tunnel connecting two body cavities (such as the rectum and the vagina) or a body cavity to the skin (like the rectum to the outside of the body). One way a fistula may form is from an abscess -- a pocket of pus in the body. The abscess may be constantly filling with body fluids such as stool or urine, which prevents healing. Eventually the fistula breaks through to the skin, another body cavity, or an organ. Fistulas are more common in Crohn's disease than in ulcerative colitis. Approximately one quarter of people with Crohn's disease develop fistulas.  (+ info)

Does anybody know if a FISTULA is commonly associated with cervical cancer?

I have found allot of information concerning this condition associated with CRONES disease, but am wondering if anyone knows the DETAILED association between CERVICAL CANCER and a RECTO-VAGINAL FISTULA .
----------

A fistula is a pathway that is not supposed to be there but is due to growth of cells or infection, most commonly infection. I have an oral fistula right now from an abscessed tooth. Crohn's disease is associated with sores like ulcers many times that become infected and yes it can cause fistula's. A recto-vaginal fistula is a pathway between the rectum (butt) bowel and vagina. This can happen from straining during childbirth too. If it is a tear and even if infection is present you need to get it repaired because if infection does set in it can be very serious. with cervical cancer, it would be caused from the growth of cells that either push hard enough to tear the area between, or make a bulge that tears, it's not very common.  (+ info)

I have Crohns disease and I think Ive got a fistula between my vagina and rectum.?

Its gray in color. Is this normal or should I be checked out. Im on pentasa and Humira injections right now for my disease
I looked at that website but how would I get that prescribed to me?
----------

I can't answer your specific question, but have you tried low dose naltrexone? It is an FDA approved prescription drug that you get from a compounding pharmacy. It is basically a "wonder drug" for many illnesses, including Crohn's disease. Please read this link and scroll 1/3 down the page for a photo and explanation of how it helps with Crohn's. http://lowdosenaltrexone.org/

Edited to add:
Any doctor can prescribe it for you. Be sure to thoroughly read the website. It should be prescribed as "naltrexone 4.5 mg" Then you or the doctor should fax the prescription to any of the compounding pharmacies listed on the website, (listed about 2/3 down the page) and the pharmacy will mail you the medicine. You take one pill every night at bedtime.

Print out the information from the website, including this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17222320 Show the information to your doctor and ask for a prescription. If he or she refuses, find another doctor.  (+ info)

what happens to the radial pulse when you have an AV fistula?

AV fistula is in left arm..
does your pulse become bounding or weak? thanks a lot..
----------

The question is imprecise.

If the fistula is formed with the radial artery, then the radial's pulse is the fistula's - bounding and vibrating ("thrill").

If it is a more proximal (eg brachio-cubital fistula), then the distal radial pulse becomes weaker.  (+ info)

Is it at all possible to fix a fistula-in-ano/perinal abscess without surgery?

All I read seems to list the only solution as being surgery but apparently even the surgery is not certain to solve the problem as the recurrence rate is very high.

Is there any other way to remedy this problem? Diet, perhaps? Any other treatment? Thanks for your help.

What's the point of surgery if it's just going to happen again?

I'm sorry, but I think your only option is surgery. Make sure to keep the area really clean, it is prone to infection.  (+ info)
