Can someone that is allergic to peanuts have a reaction just by smelling or touching peanuts?

My husband insists on this. We have a 3 month old and I like to let her smell different foods that we eat for a sort of sensory experience. My husband got upset because I let her smell peanut butter. Can she have a reaction this way if she has an allergy? I thought it was only upon ingestion.
----------

Yes - a person with a serious peanut allergy can have a reaction just from the smell or touch of peanuts.

Not too long ago in the news, there was a story about a child who died because grandma gave him a kiss and grandma had eaten peanut butter hours earlier. Just the residual peanut butter on grandma's body coming into contact with the kid was enough to cause a severe reaction resulting in the child's death.

Sad, really. I'm glad my kids don't have allergies like that - couldn't imagine trying to keep them safe in the world when something so simple could harm them. :(  (+ info)

How much gluten would it take to cause a reaction in a gluten sensitive person?

Would a little flour put on chicken b4 being sauteed cause a reaction in a gluten sensitive person if they were to eat it?

What about an ity bitty piece of banana bread (made w/ refined wheat flour)?
----------

Depends.....
-> There is gluten sensitive....(may have varying degrees of sensitivity) .
-> There is gluten intolerant....(any gluten....causes an auto immune reaction - but the exact symptom you see may be at varrying degrees of severity.)

Even a little gluten will cause damage to a person who is intolerant (no matter what symptom they have or don't have).
When people with celiac disease eat foods or use products containing any gluten, their immune system responds by damaging or destroying villi—the tiny, fingerlike protrusions lining the small intestine. Villi normally allow nutrients from food to be absorbed through the walls of the small intestine into the bloodstream. Without healthy villi, a person becomes malnourished, no matter how much food one eats.

If you are looking for an easy substitution - for a light batter when cooking use corn starch instead of flour. For the bread find a gluten free pancake (or bread) mix and use that to make banana bread. Pamela;s brand tastes great.

ALso some things that are not obvious can contain gluten - Soy sauce, corn flakes, rice crispies... and some flavorings on corn chips...doritos etc......all have gluten.....
But - Cocoa pebbles and fruity pebbles are Gluten free and OK.

What can you do to soothe a allergic skin reaction?

I developed a reaction to the sunscreen I used on my face. It kind of burns, itches, and it's swollen and red. What can I do to help my skin heal faster? Any home remedies or stuff I can buy?
----------

Oatmeal baths can really help with skin reactions. Aveeno makes a very good oatmeal bath (find it in the pharmacy section of your store). Since it's on your face, I would reccommend that you dissolve the oatmeal in some water, take a soft cloth and soak it in the water, and dab it on your face. Oatmeal soothes the skin and also helps moisturizes. Good luck!  (+ info)

How long for an allergic reaction to start?

I've just taken my first dose of antibiotics (penicillin) for tonsillitis (15-20 mins ago) and have now noticed a rash on my elbows and lower arms, hips and the outside of my thighs. I've never had an allergic reaction to anything before - including antibiotics, although I'm not sure the current antibiotics are the same as I've taken before. I didn't notice if I had this rash before taking the tablets. It does fade under pressure (glass test). Would an allergic reaction set in this quickly?? Any help is much appreciated!
----------

Yes it definitely can. Keep a very close eye on it and if you start feeling light headed, dizzy, or short of breath get to an emergency room right away.

Other antibiotics in the penicillin family are amoxicillin, augmentin, ampicillin, etc. If you find you're allergic to penicillin I would recommend not taking any antibiotic in the penicillin family at all. Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist so they can make sure you don't end up taking it again.  (+ info)

What are the symptoms when a baby has a reaction to his first egg white meal?

Our little chap had what was supposed to be a treat, filled omelette for his birthday lunch. But about an hour later he threw up big time, followed over the next couple of hours by 2 more vomits and some diarrhoea-type symptoms. He's had more diarrhoea-type stuff this evening too, and it's sort of mucousy and yellowish. Does anyone know if this might be an egg white reaction?
----------

When can I feed my baby eggs and egg yolks?

Egg Yolks are typically fine for baby to eat around 8 months old. The egg whites should not be fed to baby before 1 year old.

Eggs are one of the top 8 of all allergens. Many studies that have been done on infants with egg allergies find that by the time the infant has reached age 5, the allergy has been outgrown! This is good news as the egg is highly nutritious and an important part of ones diet!

How common is an allergic reaction to the antibiotic KEFLUX?

I suffer from extreme anxiety problems after having a dystonic reaction to the drug Haldol. Now any prescription I take I feel like I'll have one. How common are allergic reactions to the antibiotic Keflux? The doctor has just given this to me for a urinary tract infection.
----------

Are you allergic to any other antibiotics?
Do not use Keflex if you are allergic to cephalexin, or to other cephalosporin antibiotics, such as:

*cefaclor (Ceclor);
*cefadroxil (Duricef);
*cefdinir (Omnicef);
* cefditoren (Spectracef);
*cefixime (Suprax);
*cefprozil (Cefzil);
*ceftazidime (Fortaz); or
*cefuroxime (Ceftin).

Before using Keflex, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs (especially penicillins), or if you have:

*kidney disease;
*liver disease;
*a stomach or intestinal disorder such as colitis;

*f you are malnourished.  (+ info)

How long does it take to get an allergic reaction to something?

I've taken some medicine i know i was not allergic to it. But It's been so many years I wouldn't know if I now became allergic to it or not. I just wanna know how long does it take for reaction to show? If u r allergic to something or not.
----------

Depending on the severity of the reaction it can be a few minutes (like with a peanut allergy) or a few hours. It just depends how sensitive your body is to whatever you ingest. Its better to look for tell tale signs of a reaction such as swelling of the throat, mouth or flushing or a rash on your body.  (+ info)
