What is a bronchospasm (or bronchial spasm)?

I've had a cough for 4 weeks now. I went to the doctor's like a week and a half ago. I got a chest x-ray and he said there was a little bit of stuff in my lungs, it wasn't pneumonia, and he was going to treat it like bronchitis. I feel fine and I don't have a fever, just a cough that is sometimes dry and sometimes isn't. When I do cough something up, its like kind of clear/white. Earlier today when I started coughing, it felt like something around where my throat or chest was started closing or something, and I could barely breathe. It sounded really weird when I was trying to breathe. I don't know what wheezing sounds like, but it might have been like that. It went away after about a minute, and I kept coughing a lot after that, it was a more productive cough. It scared me because its the first time this happened. My mom said it might have been a bronchial spasm, so I was wondering what that is. Also, I don't smoke, I'm not around smokers, and I don't have asthma.
----------

Sounds like bronchospasm to me.

Definition: A bronchospasm is when the bands of muscles around your airways tighten uncontrollably. This tightening causes your airways to get more narrow. That leads to asthma symptoms such as chest tightness, wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath.
Pronunciation: BRONK-oh-spaz-emz
Also Known As: bronchoconstriction
Examples: Whenever Joe went outside on dry, windy, hot days, he could feel the bronchospasms start in his airways. Before long, he would be wheezing and gasping for air.  (+ info)

Can bronchial spasms disqualify me from becoming an Air Force Aviator?

i wanna become an air force aviator, but will bronchial spasms stop me?
----------

Probably. This is only a guess, but if these impair your abilities for even seconds, that is long enough for the bad guys to shoot you down.  (+ info)

I have severe bronchial spasms, according to my doctor but nothing seems to stop this coughing and tickle?

in my throat. He prescribed an antibiotic, an inhaler and this cough syrup (similiar to Robitussin) but with codeine. You would think the codeine would have knocked me out last night. No, it didn't. I been drinking lots of water and sucking on cough drops.

Help? Does this just take time or is their something I'm not doing or trying.

Should I have a shot of strong whiskey before going to bed?
----------

Hey...the antibiotic should clear the infection and the inhaler will help open you up. Maybe the cough med is not strong enough or not enough of a dose. Call the doc and check. For tonight, get out the vicks, put it on your chest, drink something warm....no caffeine or you'll be wired and won't get to sleep....even warm up some water and put a little lemon in it.....

Whiskey might not be a bad idea, but don't mix it with the codeine......

Hope you feel better soon...................  (+ info)

I was just recently prescribed Prednisone from my doctor to get rid of these bronchial spasms?

Fortunately, I'm only on this for 7 days.

Its says to take 3 - (20MG) tablets the first 2 days and then, 2 - (20MG) tablets the remaining 5 days. My doctors office advised me to take the pills EARLY in the day, to try and prevent the sleeping issues (i.e, side effect - difficulty sleeping). I'm concerned about the weight gain.

My issue is that I'm constantly eating. I'm never full.
----------

I have been on Prednisone many times.

It can make you feel like you are going to die if you cannot get more and more and more food. It only lasts while you are on it though. They do not prescribe it for very long because it can do some tough things to your body long term.

If you are concerned about the weight gain, watch what you eat. Eat filling good for you foods. Oatmeal is a good example. Anything high in fiber. You can also drink a lot of water. This helps you get that full feeling. If you want to, you can add those little packages of flavoring to the water.

Just because you are constantly hungery doesn't mean you have to eat chips, cookies, and ice cream. Eat smart and you won't have to worry about too much weight gain. Do a little more activity, which shouldn't be a problem because steroids usually boost your energy. Don't overdo it though.

At the end of the seven days, everything should go back to normal. No worries!  (+ info)

This year I have been diagnsed w/ chronic bronchistis & bronchial spasms?

This year I have been diagnosed w/ chronic bronchistis & bronchial spasms. I have never "coughed up" anything until recently. I am now coughing up a clear fluid, with what looks like ASHES in it..or may coffee grounds. Does anyone know what this may be? I have had chest x-rays. Are chest x-rays enough to determine if I have lung cancer? Thank You. I have been to the doctor and hospital on numerous occasions regarding this.
----------

That would be blood. When coughed up it looks like coffee grounds. Coughing up blood can occur with severe bronchitis. However, it can also be a sign of other problems. Have you only seen one doctor for your bronchitis? If so, I'd recommend seeing another doctor, just to get a second opinion and make sure you've got all your bases covered. Another doctor may have different ideas for treatment which could help you out more, or might be able to discover any other problems you have, that your first doctor may have missed.

Chest x-rays don't always reveal cancer, particularly in early stages. A multi-slice scan (64 slice, I think it is?) would show more detail, and a biopsy could also reveal information that an x-ray could miss. A biopsy could also reveal nothing if it's taken from a cancer-free area, even if there is cancer elsewhere.

If you are concerned about cancer, I would say ask your doctor about checking for it specifically. It's important to be proactive if you have reason to suspect something else is going on with your health.

That said, bronchitis can be quite nasty, and that could well be all that's wrong. I know, having had several family members die of lung cancer, I sometimes get an inkling of fear that that's what could be happening to me. Try not to worry too much over it, if you can help it. At least, don't fret and obsess over it - worrying can drive a person crazy, and it does no good at all. Be smart, get a second opinion if you feel that you need to, and if that all comes back clear, you should be able to rest easy.

Good luck to you. I hope you can get whatever is wrong taken care of, and you start feeling better soon.  (+ info)
