leg cramps in convalescence .....?
person recently had surgery ... is on restrictions and has a 7 inch horizontal abdominal incession that is healing. does have low iron count - is in between 6 and 7. blood pressure has been low - second number was in 30's after surgery on monday, was at 56 when discharged from hospital on weds. but no side effects of dizzie, etc from that. restricted to only lifting five lbs. and has to get lots of bed rest. something about will have to have a "tie up surgery" if they over strain and bladder drops.
keeps getting leg cramps which are painful. are there bed exercises or anything that can help with the cramps? is it the lack of activity that is causing them?
they had to wear these leg brace things while in the hospital that would collapse and expand around their lower part of their legs.. said it was to stimulate the muscles and stop possible clots. will mention the stockings .. thanks!
and to eat some banana.
----------
it could be also from low potasium...you can put warm packs to relieve the pain caused by the cramps... like ankle pumping to help circulate the blood to your calf muscles. also check and inform with the doctor about it maybe you have embolism or something...use anti-embolism stockings
Try not to move or elevate your legs if it`s really paiful (claudication) because if its emoblism movement is prohibitted or the warm packs because you may dislodge the emboli (

Does drinking water helps with memory ?
Someone told me that there was a study done in some
convalescence homes that a lot of the folks thought to be
senile turned out to be dehydrated. Their memory impoved
some 50% after they were properly rehydrated. I also heard
that an elderly person needs 80 ounces of water per day.
Is this all true ?
THx.
----------
Of course. Water is needed for your whole body to run properly, especially your brain. Dehydration is very dangerous and can lead to all kinds of physical and mental problems.
That doesn't mean you will be able to improve your memory by drinking galleons of water. (

I'll be operated for a cataract but i have a 7 mos old baby weighing 18lbs. is it ok to carry her after the surgery (I mean during the two weeks of convalescence which follow the surgery).
----------
I had it done on both eyes. I was told to watch the lifting & also to try to stop sneezes & hard coughing for a few days because it could do damage. your optomologist should tell you these things.. ASK Him! (

10 year old daughter home from hospital after having meningitis.?
She was taken ill with pneumoccocal meningitis over a week ago - fortunately I realised she was seriously ill and got her treated before septecaemia could develop. She has been given a week of IV antibiotics and is now being monitored at home. My question is how long do children take to recuperate after a serious illness like this, is there anything more I can do for her than just provide as much food, snacks, drinks, TV, games, books, etc.
Please don't answer me with lots of information about meningitis - I understand the condition - what I need advice on is convalescence.
Thankyou to all those who took time to consider their answers with tact and real thought.
----------
Children are very, very resilient (I'm sure you know), so she'll probably start feeling much more energetic within weeks rather than months.
Initially, let her do what she wants (not in the sense of letting her eat chocolate and crisps and nothing else, but in that if she want s to lie watching tv all day, that's probably what's best for her at the moment).
If you're providing all she needs, checking on her regularly and giving her company when she seems to need it, you can't go far wrong. Once she starts needing more stimulation, you'll pick up on that because she'll either start to seem a little restless with doing nothing, or she'll tell you she's bored.
Also, you must be very very tired yourself. You need to rest and mentally relax too, or else you won't be able to look after her as well as you might.
You sound very caring and aware of her needs anyway. Your instincts will take you through it.
Good luck to both of you! (

Disciplinary Action for poor job performance after return from surgery under FMLA.?
I was out of work for a month for treatment and surgery for Adult Onset Hydrocephalus. Three weeks back to work, and I receive a corrective action for my poor job performance in the weeks leading up to my leave.
Because people with Hydrocephalus often have symptoms such as loss of cognitive skills, personality changes, sleeping disorders or unable to wake, mentally checking out, all of which I suffered, I received a corrective action 10 weeks AFTER the fact.
I’m healthy and feel great now, and my employer knew what was happening every step of the way during my convalescence.
I am really hurt by this. Is there any protection for me under FMLA or Americans with Disabilities act? I have a chronic progressive condition that cannot be cured but can be successfully treaded. I don’t want this is my permanent file (except in the form of Medical documentation)
I didn't do anything crazy, now. Was just very lethargic and stayed in my office.
Can I do anything to protect myself?
guess I need to reiterate-Hydrocephalus is a chronic condition that is non curable but can be treated. Therefore it meets the criteria of the ADA of 1990, and of course FMLA.
I did not have the flu or a cold or chicken pox so the second answer would not apply to this situation.
----------
Let's say, for example, you hired an attorney to represent you in court. The day of the trial, however, the attorney wasn't feeling well. Instead of standing up an representing you and your case, he just sat there. This would be unfair to you wouldn't it?
Well, this is how it appears to an employer. If you are no capable of giving 100% or you effort, it is best to not show up for work, than to show up an make a lousy effort. The truth is, this type of situation happens to hundreds of people each year during cold and flu season. They are forced to go to work; no sick leave or personal time off, the only way the are able to make their financial obligations is to show up for work everyday, no matter what. Once they are there, they are feeling miserable and if Tylenol Daytime or DayQuil doesn't work well enough, they must take that chance.
So, my advice to you is to not make such a big deal about this "corrective action" and be more careful next time. There have been many people who have been terminated because of the inability to do their job - eventhough descrimination is illegal - by their employer, because of the what I call the big man vs. little man complex (this is when litigation takes so long, most ordinary people can not afford the long, exhaustive legal battles against big companies).
If your doctor have not discussed to you your options for disability, you should do so. He/she can also discuss with you any alternative treatment that may help you combat these symptoms while you are at work.
Don't mean to sound unsympathetic, but this is the truth! (

----------
Don't worry Champ! I was the same way. At 15 yrs old I grew about 10" in one summer. Just try to do some sort of aerobic exercise the more you exercise the more calories you will burn and your body will ask you for more food. The food will give your body the vitamins it needs making you grow faster. Besides shaving is a pain in the a**. (
