My 13 yr old has branch retinal vein occlusion. Is this linked to any other systemic disease?

My daughter has high cholesterol which doctors believe is the main cause of her disorder. However, it is very uncommon in a child her age. I need help in deciding how to proceed as the public health system here in Trinidad is really inadequate. Is there somewhere that I can go to get international medical assistance with this problem? Right now my daughter is taking painkillers regularly because of bad headaches and eye pain.
----------

hello ,your daughter has high cholesterol levels which indicates a genetic form of hypercholesterolaemia ,this results in cholesterol plaques and emboli to block small blood vessels as in her case the branch retinal vein ,it is a systemic disease and it needs urgent address   (+ info)

What requirements do I need to pass a medical for HGV1? I have a retinal vein occlusion, but my perriferal OK.

I was passed by DVLA six months ago, but my licence is up for renewal soon and I don't know how to go about it.
----------

The details should be on the DVLA website somewhere.

Also go to your optician for an eye test. Any decent optician will be aware of the sight requirements for all levels of drivers including HGV.

Your doctor should also do the same for medical conditions.  (+ info)

what is the incidence of bilateral central retinal vein occlusion?

Most cases of BRVO are due to idiopathic factors. Usually, patients have an anatomic predisposing factor, such as an arteriovenous crossing where the artery compresses the vein. This compression leads to clot formation and subsequent BRVO.
Inflammatory conditions that affect the retinal veins may cause local damage that predisposes the individual to intravascular clot formation with subsequent BRVO. Some of the inflammatory conditions reported in the literature are the following:
Sarcoidosis
Lyme disease
Serpiginous choroiditis
Thrombophilic conditions, such as the following, may also be involved:
Protein S deficiency
Protein C deficiency
Resistance to activated protein C (factor V Leiden)
Antithrombin III deficiency
Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome
Lupus erythematosus
Gammopathies  (+ info)

has anyone tried avastin for hemi retinal vein occlusion?

Although Avastin apparently has no contraindications I see no clinical studies relating to retinal vein occlusion. Have you tried laser photocoagulation therapy?  (+ info)

Is central retinal artery occlusion correctible after nine months of diagnosis?

On the only visit to an opthalmologist I was given Timolol and nothing else was discussed. What should I do at this point?
----------

I don't do ophthalmology, but I'm pretty sure that it isn't correctable. Eye tissue is pretty delicate & any damage down "down stream" of the occlusion is likely permanent by now.  (+ info)

Is a Markus Gunn pupil ALWAYS associated with central retinal artery occlusion?

(also known as a relative afferent pupillary defect) describes the finding during the swinging-flashlight test whereupon the patient's pupil dilates instead of constricting when the light swings from the unaffected "good" eye to the affected "bad" eye.

Upon shining the light into the "good" eye, both pupils will constrict. However, when the light moves to the "bad" eye, the light will not be perceived and both pupils will dilate as if there was no light at all.

It is also considered lack of a consensual reflex in the affected eye, showing optic nerve damage in which the sensory or afferent stimulus sent to the brainstem is reduced. Severe retinal disease may also yield a Marcus Gunn pupil.  (+ info)

I just had a retinal branch vein occulsion that I have been treated for. What else should I be on guard.?

My physican says my bp is good my cholesterol is low and all my other blood work looks good. 67 yr old male non smoker, non drinker
----------

This page identifies a number of risk factors for retinal branch vein occlusion, the most prominent one not in your list being diabetes: http://www.avclinic.com/retinal_vein_occlusion.htm But obviously, your doctor's advice should govern, insofar as additional testing for related conditions is concerned. Sometimes, as we get older, things simply don't work as well as they used to work.  (+ info)

how serious is vein occlusion in the arm?

My mum has severe copd, angina, osteoperosis, diabetes amongst other things and is in heart failure. She is currently in heart failure and in hospital with a chest infection. Her arms, hands and legs have been swollen and this has been treated but the left arm wasn´t responding. I have been told that they have found on an ultrasound that mum has an occlusion of the vein in her left arm and she has anti coags and anti biotics. How serious is this?
I have just been told that the doppler ultrasound shows no clot. I´m not sure why there is the occlusion, the vascular team are hoping that the anti coag and antibiotic therapy will resolve things ....

Very sorry to hear about your mom- However PLEASE do not expect us non-professionals in the medical field to give you any answers, if some have answered its because I am sure they have a small %age of knowledge MAYBE but YOU should not add to your stress more by reading everyones personal diagnosis as all the ailments you have posted are of a grave nature and ONLY a medical person with experience is able to really give you a general response -Unless the medical person sees your mom in person and conducts a thorough examination even they cannot give you any conclusive diagnosis
I am sure your mom is in good hands at the hospital and they will do their best- IN the meantime you be Brave and relaxed as this will enable to help you to take care and think positively on how you should make your mom comfortable- Prayers if you do, mental peace if you can muster will be far helpful to tide over the difficult period +it will help if your mom does not see you so stressed
All the best  (+ info)

If your retinal Vein burst open is it dangerous?

I asked a question earlier about some symtoms I've been having with my left eye and people seem to think a retinal vein burst open and I want to know what it can cause, like can it cause blindness or anything like that? Also Should I see a doctor right away?
Here is the question I posted before:

Please Help Me!! I think something is wrong with my vision?

I think something is wrong with my left eye, I also had really bad Iritis in the same eye about three years ago. But now only in that eye I keep seeing 'floaters' well, at least 1. It usually pops up around the center of where I'm looking sometimes off to the right side. But when I look with both eyes I don't really see any floaters, It's only in the left eye. Also When I look at lines out of my left eye they end up looking squiggly and when I look at my hands or other objects like furniture it looks strange like deformed or curved and wavy like they shouldn't be. But my other eye is fine...
And when I look with both eyes, lines look pretty straight except for sometimes I'll see it curve just a bit and I don't see any floaters, my hand and other objects look normal, and when I read it looks a little strange like when I'm reading one line the line below curves up and makes it hard to read, and when I read with my left eye, it's hard to read because the lines keep moving or curving, but I can read fine with my right eye...

It's been like this for a few days and I don't know what it could be or what to do...so Please help me.

**I also use glasses**

**And also this morning when I woke up my left eye was all red and a little itchy, and there was some goopy stuff comming out of it..so it made it a little harder to see out of it**
----------

Hi you probably don't have a retina emergency--but it sounds like more than floaters, so yes get an exam with an Ophthalmologist or Optometrist.  (+ info)
