Could I have fractured a rib and not know it?

I fell down my stairs two days ago and instantly my whole upper body hurt and it was hard to breathe. The day after I was even more sore but it was easier to breathe and only my hand (which I think might be sprained) and my rib cage on my left side hurt. It hurts when I put any kind of pressure on it, but I can still move around. Could this be a broken rib? Are you able to move when you have a broken rib?
----------

It's certainly possible. Not much you can do about a broken rib though. If you have significant trouble breathing, I would see a doctor.  (+ info)

Should I seek treatment for a fractured rib?

About 1 week ago I fell on my left side on my rib cage. It was extremely painful. Ever since then it hurts taking a deep breath, sitting up, twisting, touching my ribs etc. I am inclined to believe I fractured a rib or ribs. I have not gone to the doctor because there doesn't seem to be much of a treatment for them except pain relievers, ice and rest. Should I go to the doctor for this problem or just do self treatment?
----------

Yes, definitely see the doctor. So they can make sure its nothing more serious than that. And can possibly give you a better solution to handle the pain. Hope it gets better soon.  (+ info)

What does it feel like to crack or fracture a rib? Especially on the back side?

i dont have any pain when i press on my rib cage but feel mild pain when i breath and bend over. possible rib fracture? Any experiences?

A cracked or fractudes rib is probably the most painful thing. It just hurt like crazy wehen you do any movement.

Mild pain as you describe it sounds to me as a buise.  (+ info)

What is the treatment for a fractured rib?

I was in an accident and am going to the doctor tomorrow. Generally, speaking what is the treatment? Will I be out of work?
----------

There is nothing you can do for a fractured rib other than medicate the pain. Doctors no longer rap up ribcages to support broken ribs because it restricts your breathing and can lead to pneumonia.

Unless you work is physically demanding, you will probably not miss any job time.  (+ info)

What is the best way to heal a fractured rib?

Doctor looked at my x-rays and I have a small fracture in one of my ribs. said I should just take it easy, but is there anything I can do or is there any medication/vitamins I can take to speed or just help recovery.
----------

Man, I just went through this. There is no substitute for time. Ya just gotta let it heal naturally. The body itself will heal it the best and taking any kind of medication/vitamins or 'other' will only set you back.  (+ info)

How long will it take my number 8 rib fracture to heel?

This happened sitting up out of bed 5 months ago! When i stood up, it felt like i got stabbed in the lung, and almost fell. I went to the doctor the next day and was told it probably was a pulled muscle. I went to the doctor again yesterday, because its still pain full to sit (5 months later) they did an x-ray, and said its fractured. Why hasn't this heeled after so long? Im a 37 year old male.
----------

Ribs can take a long time to heal. You may just generally heal more slowly than others. Six weeks is an absolute minimum time frame, and it often takes much longer. To help manage the pain while the fracture heals:

Put ice on the injured area.
Get extra rest.
Take pain medicine such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Your doctor may prescribe a stronger pain medicine if over-the-counter medicines don't work.
While you are healing, it is important to cough or take the deepest breath you can at least once an hour. This can help prevent pneumonia or a partial collapse of the lung tissue.

If you have fractured your ribs and you have not injured your neck or back, it is a good idea to lie on your injured side. This may seem odd at first, but it will let you take deeper breaths.

In the past, it was common to tape or tightly wrap the injured rib area. But you should not do this, even if it eases your pain. It can keep you from taking deep breaths, and it could cause parts of your lung to collapse or could increase your risk for pneumonia.

Everone heals at a different rate. Give it a month to a month and a half at least. I had a broken collarbone, and it took almost two months, before I felt like my old self again.  (+ info)
