What symptoms of a sinus infection will cold medicine alleviate?

We thought my sister had a cold. She took cold medicine today, and it didn't alleviate any of her symptoms, so we believe it began as a sinus infection instead of manifested into one from a cold. Is this possible? Should the cold medicine helped at least some of her sinus pressure, headache and nasal drainage/congestion?

The only sinus medicine that will really help congestion is sudafed or pseudoephedrine (generic name). You need to buy this behind the counter at the drugstore as some idiots make methamphetamine out of the active ingredient. If it is actually a sinus infection (lasts more than a few days), she needs to see the doctor for antibiotics or even steroids. Remember, your sinuses are very close to your brain and you do not want an infection there. I had to have surgery on my sinuses as many people do, because they are closed off by bone and infections can build up in these closed spaces. Nasal sprays like Afrin are OK for a few days, but no more. They have a rebound effect that makes your sinuses swell up after you use them, so you can be stuck using them for the rest of your life. Does she have a headache in the front of her face (eyes, cheeks, etc.) that feels like pressure? That can indicate sinus problems. If she's not better in a few days, have her bend over forward and see if the pain gets worse-sinus pressure worsens in this position. If she doesn't get better after a few days anyways, she needs to see a good ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat doctor), not just your family doctor. This can be very prolonged and painful if left untreated, trust me.  (+ info)

What is a good sinus rinse to kill bacteria that causes odor?

i heard somebody used collidal silver and chlorophyll part of their sinus rinse to kill the bacteria thats causin the smell..i'm on antibiotics right now from a sinus infection, so i don't know what else to do.

Dear Lady, well the antibiotics should take care of the odor, but in the meantime here is what truly works. Go to a health food store and ask them for a Neti Pot. It is a little teapot looking thing that you fill with lukewarm water and salt. Usually they will sell the salt packets, but if you don't see any you can just use regular table salt. The directions with the Neti Pot will tell you how much salt to use. Follow the directions: you tilt your head to the side and pour the water from the pot into your nose..it goes through the sinus cavity and out the other nostril. It sounds gross, but it isn't and it works. It takes about 3 minutes to do it. I have also used colloidal silver in a spray that I bought at the health food store also.  (+ info)

What is the best natural sinus medicine?

I have been getting colds or sinus infections every other week.
I have had sinus pressure, congestion, dizziness, headache etc
Any good natural medicines to take to help or prevent this? Looking for something that works really well and I can take regularly?

My husband uses this to keep from getting bronchitis, and I use to to cure sinus infections. THere are many kinds of bacteria that live in the sinuses, and this gets rid of all the bad ones!.This is the only thing that really helped me --- my Dr. told me about a sinus wash that will kill bacteria.
you need

distilled water
sea salt
liquid chlorophyll and colloidal silver from the health food store.
in a glass mix 1/4 cup water with a pinch of salt and heat to body temperature.
add 5 drops each silver and chlorophyll and mix.
using a large dropper (like one used for infant medication) drop 2 full droppersfull into one side of the nose while laying down.
Turn the head and let it drain out the other nostril. Be sure to have paper towels handy.
The silver kills the bacteria and there are several hundred kind that can live in the sinus cavities and anti biotics don't get rid of them all.
Do this twice a day for a week, mixing up the mixture fresh each time.
Then do it once a week for maintenance.
There is nothing in this that will hurt you, and it cured me.
I do not have to take claritin, or antibiotics anymore.

What causes a sinus infection and is it preventable?

I keep getting sinus infections, and my kids and I keep passing them around. Is there anything we can do to STOP getting these miserable things??

Are there any natural treatments to get rid of the one I have right now?

At one point, everyone at my work had sinus infections. I started getting the symptoms which were lot of drainage and cough.

I went to my doctor and was only prescribed medication to treat my symptoms because I was able to get in to the doctor before it turned into an infection.

The drainage is probably the biggest problem
-Mucinex is suppose to let you loosen it and cough it all up
-Sudafed will help you dry it up
-Antihistamine like Zyrtec, Claritin, Benadryl also helps
-Ever since then, I have been taking Zyrtec-D daily, I spray with a prescription nasal spray (Veramyst) daily, and just prevent the drainage and sinus problems by constantly taking these meds.
I haven't gotten close to an infection since then

I hope this helps  (+ info)

How can I stop sinus drainage in the back of my throat?

I wake up every single morning with sinus drainage in the back of my throat. Im constantly clearing my throat and I know it has to drive my coworkers nuts. No pain. I dont know if its allergy or not. I dont want my body dependant on meds though. Any suggestions?

Have you tried NeilMed Sinus Rinse? It consists of a plastic squeeze bottle and packets of salt and baking soda that you mix with distilled water to rinse your nostrils and sinuses. I know it sounds gross, but it does work and it's cheap. The packets of salt and soda make the water similar to your natural "nose juices" so that it's not that uncomfortable to use. Wal-Mart and Walgreens carry it. It's less than $15 for the 50 rinse starter kit, and you just use it once or twice a day. I warm the water for about fifteen seconds in the microwave before I use it and it feels much more comfortable when warmed slightly.  (+ info)

How do I get rid of a Sinus problems?

I have been resting and drinking lots of water. Other than that I have been taking Sinus meds to help me sleep at night. Besides going to the doctor, does anyone have any ideas or remedies on how to kick these Sinus congestion problems?

Try using a hot wet facecloth, and press it firmly on the area where the pain is. ( as hot as you can stand it, without burning your skin)
It helps to "liquify" the mucus, and help it drain easier. It's best if you do it while laying down, or in a slightly reclining position..... and keep changing the cloths ( and re-heating them) until you feel it all start to drain.

If it hurts, or is painful when you bend over, it may be a sinus infection, and you should check with your doctor and possibly get some antibiotics.

The heat and plenty of fluids should work... but if it doesn't - you may need to see the doctor, regardless.

What medicine can I take to relieve sinus congestion?

I am having horrible sinus congestion, and it is very hard to sleep at night. I have tried Zyrtec and Advil Cold & Sinus but neither of these tend to really help. What product do you recommed to relieve my congestion?

Tylenol nighttime cold
Alka seltzer nighttime cold
Nyquil cold
or any that are available in generic form
A humidifier may help as well as adding another pillow to raise your head to help sinuses drain.

Hope you get to feeling better.  (+ info)

What is the best way to releive sinus pressure?

I've tried afrin and zicam, but you can only use them for 3 days. And Somtimes I take sudafed and tylonel sinus but you can't use those all the time either. Every morning I wake up with sinus pressure probably due to allerigies, does anybody know how i can get releif for this once and for all ? thanks.

To relieve the sinus pain, start with a hot wash cloth on the face and eyes. Repeat a few times that will help until the next procedure is completed. You can buy a saline solution spray bottle at the Pharmacy along with Nasonex. Nasonex is a nasal spray used once a day, preferable in the morning when you wake.
This medication works and is worth the trip to the doctor for the prescription. First part you clean out the nasal cavity using the saline then use nasonex only two pumps on each side. Stop smoking if you are a smoker, and stay out of smoke filled areas. Take your allergy medicine every morning. Never consider surgery, the infections come back and it is very painful. There is no quick or permanent fix for this recurring infection.  (+ info)
