What are the chances of getting swine flu twice?

I have swine flu at the moment. Please don't freak out. I'm fine, it feels like a normal flu.

I just want to know what are my chances of getting it again? I take it my body build up some antibodies so the chances of getting it again are really slim?

long story short ... different strains of Influenza A infect different species. Normally, those strains will not cross species. In other words, pigs can't be infected by the bird flu and the swine flu can't infect birds. But sometimes, an animal will be infected with two different types of influenza A at the same time and the two viruses swap genetic information. When this happens, there is a possiblility to jump species. This is likely what is happening in Mexico ... and now the US. Humans have never been exposed to this type of "new" influenza and our immune systems don't react very well. This happens every few decades and lots of people die. Sad but true.  (+ info)

I was reading an article that said 28 pregnant women in the US have died from swine flu. I know its only 28 out of how many million people but i am very scared. I'm planning on getting both the seasonal flu vaccine and the swine flu vaccine.

I've also read that in like 1976 when they gave a differfent kind of swine flu vaccine that people got neurological problems.

Ah its so scary, but do you think i'm better off getting the vaccine?

No, I would not get the vaccination.
I would wait until after having the baby, wouldn't take any risks.
Of course, not getting the vaccination is a risk, but if I get the flu, I get it.

Because swine flu is one of the top stories on every news media resource, many people who have normal flus or even colds, are going to the doctor's office or buying lots of medicines and drugs. What if it is a corporate and government sponsored media sensationalized rumor to try and help the boost the global economy?

no, dude the swine flu is real it's already killed approx. 145 people in mexico and is spreading across the world as we speak.
Besides spending money on the health industry wouldn't be a great boost in the economy since the health sector of the USA is one of the few HEALTHY parts of the economy which is still growing even in this recession. Now if the flu somehow made people buy houses and cars out of some weird panic or something now that's when i would start to think the governments behind it haha.  (+ info)

A lot of people seem to be going so nuts about swine flu, could someone tell me what's all the ruckus about?
All of the ruckus is about the fact that this is a strain of the flu that most of us have never been exposed to before. Because we have not been exposed to it before our bodies don't have any immunity to it.

Also, there is some concern that the strain may mutate and become more deadly than it is. Right now most people that catch the swine flu are mildly sick. It is very contagious so what is most important is that you stay away from other people if you get sick. Over 2,000 university kids got sick in the first week of school. We could have a lot of sick people during flu season. Every year people die from the flu. More people die each year from the regular seasonal flu than have been dying from the swine flu. But for people with underlying health issues, this flu has been difficult even in its current mild form.

I was just wondering, since I've heard a lot of people talking about scientists working on a vaccine for swine flu. How long will it take for a vaccine to be developed, though? After all, the HIV virus has been recognized since the late 70s or early 80s, and we STILL don't have a vaccine for that!
For some there will be a vaccine for most not one available for sometime. Military,medical personnel etc.. all go first.

Me personally I never get a flu vaccine. Seems kinda useless at this point in my life. Virus have been with us for sometime and are not going away anytime soon this will not be the last flu virus.

I just got home from the hospital and I have the flu. The nurse swabbed my nose and the test came back positive for flu. My fever hasn't went over 102 and I havent been throwing up. The nurse said she would have to send the test results off to see if it was swine flu or not? How long does this last?

I am really freaked out that it's going to come to Washington. Someone threw up the other day, and everyone is coughing like nuts, it's really freaking me out, I don't like going to school because this guy keeps coughing on me on purpose and I am really scared as helllll from catching the swine flu.
What are the symptons that let you know if you have it?
Like regular human flu, symptoms of swine flu include: fever, lethargy (that means tiredness), lack of appetite and coughing. There might also be a runny nose, coughing, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhea.
To prevent catching swine flu, wash your hands regularly. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers and wipes will do fine as well. Also, stay away from people that exhibit the aforementioned symptoms. You can not catch swine flu by eating pork or pig-based products.
If you do catch swine flu, don't panic. It is very likely that you will recover from it. Go to the doctor, and he/she will provide you with either Tamiflu (oseltamivir) or Relenza (zanamavir). So far, few people have died.
