What possible disease may have both the symptoms of trismus and left arm paresthesias?

The lock-jaw may have come from anxiety but I'm trying to narrow down whether this might possibly be angina... The tingling started in the arm and it spread through the left shoulder and chest area... There was also some discomfort and tightness around the chest..

Take ECG and check the heart. Otherwise cranial nerves IX and X might have affected. Consult the doctor.

Trismus after removal of wisdom teeth?

HOw long is trismus normal or can be expected for after the removal of wisdom teeth? Personal experiences are welcomed, please, thanks :)
----------

I get a bit of trismus after every dental visit, and my dentist (who I work for) always recommends taking OTC anti-inflammatories, switching to a soft diet, keep limited opening of your mouth, and to use a warm moist compress on the joint area. If I do this then I can usually get rid of the discomfort after 2 days. The warm, moist compress seems to help me the most. I like to wet a washcloth then place it in the microwave for a few, then I usually lay down with it on the side that hurts. If it doesn't go away you should definitely consult the dentist who did the surgery.  (+ info)

can chewing on ice cause Trismus?

I chew several cups of ice while i work. i have cracked a couple of teeth, and i know it is bad for me but i cant stop it. Can chewing ice be the cause of my case of Trismus?
----------

Yes, this can very well be the cause of trismus, because you are overworking your joints and muscles.

There will be signs consistent with clenching and / or grinding teeth.

I hope the following article will help :

I just found out i have Trismus "lock jaw" and need to have surgery. Does anyone have any experience advice?

This surgery is complicated, but only go for it if you really really have to go for it, tmj surgery can have complications later such as fusion and ankylosis of the joints as you get older  (+ info)

Post wisdom teeth removal.. trismus..?

Im going to break this down into parts:

I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed, the procedure was to last 45 mins it ended up lasting 90 mins. The oral surgeon said he hadn't dealt with as difficult teeth as mine for about 15 years. (they were very big and the holes are very deep).

Recovery sucked but went well i was perfectly fine within a week or so

I went back due to pains and a minor bump on my right side i had a dry socket on my left and what seemed to be a small secondary infection on my right side. antibiotics and packing were given

I went back 3 days later because my left side swelled up majorly, the michellyn man had nothing on me. Though my right side was perfectly fine now. at that time my jaw wasn't opening past a finger either. He put a hole in my mouth to drain it all out and i continued the antibiotics

went back for a check up and for the jaw thing. Swellings better, new antibiotics given. for my trismus i was instructed to use a 5 stack of tongue depressors taped high on one side and just a bit on the other, and was told to put it in and twist it vertically hold it in for 30 mins a day or so. the pain is mind numbing when i do this i cant even begin to explain it.

So I follow directions Im assuming the rapid stretching is to break the adhesions and drain the infection area more. 3 sessions later (i have 1 hour of more freedom of jaw movement per session.) it goes back to normal... 1 finger. I was told by 4 sessions there should be some decent improvement

my question is general really I REALLY dont want them to have to "rip" my jaw open surgically. And im just interested in any input anyone has on the matter of trismus induced by the 3rd molar removal... Basically.. what should i do? what has worked for others? What have you experienced/seen?

Thanks in advance for reading and answering this.

I have trismus after having all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed?

4 weeks ago tomorrow (Monday) I had all 4 of my wisom teeth removed. Every since I have had a problem of opening my mouth. About a week ago it seemed to be getting slightly better but today when I woke up I could barely open my mouth once again. My dentist keeps repeatedly telling me it's completely normal but I'm not seeing any improvement at all. He said I didn't have an infection or anything (but he didn't actually look) and he keeps saying "everything is normal" so he's not helping so my question is- is this normal or something more serious? I can only open my mouth about an inch and it feels like my jaw is going to snap and break. I read trismus can be a sign of infection and it can be very serious.
----------

You need to slowly re stretch the muscles to open. When I get it (I get it alot!) I rest my fingers on my chin and slowly put pressure until I feel the stretch. It usually will start to open your jaw a little more each day. also, try chewing gum. This get blood pumping through the muscle to clean out all of the inflammatory products giving you trismus.
the best thing to do is to not baby it. I your arms or legs were sore from doing a heavy work out, you would know to do slow easy stretches to loosen things up. It's the same thing for the jaw, but it feels scarier.  (+ info)

Alleviating symptoms of postoperative trismus?

I had my wisdom teeth removed five days ago (along with four bicuspids) and am starting to get slightly annoyed with my trismus. I’ve been reading stuff online about how to help my jaw heal faster, but there is some controversy. The one thing every website is in agreement on is the application of warm, moist rags to the area. (I’ve been doing this religiously—I hope that’s okay :P)

But, am I supposed to do “jaw exercises”? (furthermore, is this just limited to opening and closing the mouth, or something else?) Some places said this will irritate the muscle more, others say it will promote revival of functionality. I dunno, any information you guys can give me about healing this (faster? :D) would be great! Thanks.
----------

You just had some major oral surgery done there, so jaw mobility would be somewhat limited. Your dentist is the person you should be seeing at this point, if you truly can't open the mouth enough to eat or drink comfortably. It is possible what's happened is one of the local injections has irritated the nerves which must pass close to the joint of the jaw. In that case, sometimes the dentist can renumb things so you can free the jaw and move it more comfortably. Once it gets moving, it stays free. Things are bound to be sore but that should free you up to move your mouth. Otherwise, yes, the moist heat helps. Not only can you apply it to the outside, but you can do heating from the inside with very warm liquids pooled in the cheek pockets until it cools off. Obviously not so hot you burn your tongue, but not lukewarm liquids either. Heat on the outside can be a bit more intense, just take care not to burn the skin. Jaw exercises are just opening and closing the mouth- at least to the extent you can, and just pushing it a tiny bit more. This is counterproductive if it causes the muscles to spasm though, so if it really is painful to do, don't. Pain is the message telling you to stop, and it's best to listen to that. Muscles do heal best with heat, anti-inflammatories, and rest- not continual movement or forced movement. Honestly though, you really should revisit the oral surgeon or dentist to have it checked out if you can't open your mouth enough to do oral care or eating is a major challenge. There are some things they can do. I had trismus as a result of dental work as well, incredibly painful, but helped immensely by a local anesthetic to numb the nerve bundle, and use of Mortrin afterwards. It should do well for you too.  (+ info)

Will trismus post wisdom teeth removal resolve itself?

Had all four wisdom teeth out under a local anaesthetic about 10 days ago. Still in quite a lot of pain and can only open my mouth a very small amount (if I open as much as I can the gap between my front top and bottom teeth is only about 2 cm).

The dentist has prescribed antibiotics and pain killers. He says I have an infection. I should have asked him when I was there but I was a little freaked out!...Can trismus be permanent? Or will the antibiotics definitely clear it up?
----------

99% sure it will clear up, but nothing is definite.
It is normal to have trismus after wisdom teeth extractions. When I had mine out, I don't think I felt normal and couldn't open fully for over a month. I couldn't eat anything without cutting it into small pieces for 2 weeks!
If it's not normal in a month, I would go back to see him.  (+ info)

How long did your trismus last after wisdom teeth extraction?

I got my 4 impacted wisdom teeth out on last Wednesday. It has been a week and 2 days and I feel like I have made a lot of progress so far! However, I cannot open my mouth very much at all. It is so frustrating because it makes it almost impossible to talk without sounding different and hard to do other things. I heard that this is trismus and many people develop it after wisdom teeth extractions and it gradually goes away. However, I am wondering generally how long it takes to go away? I have noticed some progress and I have been taking pictures almost every day to see how much it has changed, but it hasn't changed much this week. If you have had this problem after your wisdom teeth extraction, please answer my question and fill me in on what to expect and how long that I will generally have to deal with this until my mouth opens completely again. A classmate told me that it took her a MONTH. Oh boy.. I just want it to go away and right now it feels like it's never going to :(
Thanks, but I'm wondering about other people... how long that their trismus lasted after their surgery
----------

Limited opening is common following complex surgical extractions. Time is the only true healer of this phenomenon. I would recommend warm compresses and gentle massages of the temporal region. Use moist heat applications several times a day and gently attempt to open wider. Gradually, the tension will be gone. There is no absolute answer for when the areas will heal. It depends on your unique musculature and the complexity of the extractions. More swelling means more healing time... Ibuprofen or naproxen would help relieve inflammation as well. Good luck.  (+ info)

What should I be doing to help cure trismus after wisdom tooth extraction?

I had all four wisdom teeth out a week ago and everything went great except that I can't open my mouth! I read up on it and found out that it is trismus. I checked with the dentist and I don't have an infection, so the cause is muscular. How long until it goes away? Should I be doing anything to help it heal better or faster? I am a singer and I can't very well do that when I can only open my mouth so little. Not to mention that I'm hungry and smoothies aren't cutting it :)
----------

It's just the swelling and the general trauma to your jaw which makes it hard to open your mouth. I think it took me a few weeks after having all 4 wisdoms out before I could open my mouth fully and chew without discomfort.

You will just have to be patient regarding the singing! Also you could try hot compresses, like a warm wheat bag held to your cheek. The extra blood brought to the area by heat will speed up healing.

After a week you should be able to eat more solid stuff than just smoothies. You could take a couple of painkillers half an hour before eating. Try stuff like macaroni cheese, mashed potato, stewed apples, bananas etc that you can eat with a small spoon and squish against the roof of your mouth instead of chewing. There's no need to go hungry!  (+ info)
