What is the connection between malignant neoplasms and crabs?
The more common term for malignant neoplasms, cancer, is Latin for crab, and the word "carcinogen," meaning a cancer-causing agent, comes from the Greek word for crab, "karkinos." What is the connection between these two seemingly unrelated things?
Cancer, both the disease and the astronomical constellation, derive from the Latin cancer or cancrum, meaning crab. The astrological sign, of course, is said to resemble a crab and the disease was so named by the ancient Greek physician Galen (129-200 A.D.) who noted the similarity between a certain type of tumor with a crab as well—the swollen veins around the tumor resembling the legs of a crab.
Old English adopted cancer directly from Latin and used it for a variety of spreading sores and ulcers. This early sense survives in the modern word canker. From c.1000 in a manuscript called Læce Boc (Leech Book), collected in Oswald Cockayne’s Leechdoms, Wortcunning, and Starcraft of Early England, Vol. II, 1865:
Gemeng wið þam dustum, clæm on ðone cancer.
(Mix with the dust, smear on the cancer.)
And from Wyclif’s 2 Timothy, 1382:
The word of hem crepith as a kankir
The word was being applied specifically to the disease we today call cancer by the beginning of the 17th century. From Philemon Holland’s translation of Pliny’s Historie of the World:
Cancer is a swelling or sore comming of melancholy bloud, about which the veins appeare of a blacke or swert colour, spread in manner of a Creifish clees.
The astronomical sense of cancer is from the Latin name for the constellation of the crab. The name was known to the Anglo-Saxons, but only as a Latin name and was not assimilated into English until the Middle English period. It appears in Ælfric’s De Temporibus Anni, written c.993, in a list of the constellations of the Zodiac:
Feorða • Cancer • þæt is Crabba
(Fourth, Cancer, that is the crab.)
The Anglicized name appears c.1391 in Chaucer’s Treatise on the Astrolabe:
In this heved of cancer is the grettist declinacioun northward of the sonne...this signe of cancre is clepid the tropik of Somer.
(At this first point (head) of cancer is the greatest declination northward of the sun…this sign of cancer is named the tropic of summer.)

Can I use the miconazole nitrate 2% vulvar cream inside my vagina? One of the suppositories fell in the toilet?
I bought the Monistat 3 Day suppository combo pack with the tube of vulvar miconazole nitrate 2% cream. I dropped one of the suppositories in the toilet accidentally and want to know if I could just use some of the cream with the applicator to substitute. I'd really like to finish treatment and thought the vulvar cream and suppositories are made of the same thing.
You can use the cream internally but it won't be very effective.
The best thing I've found for a yeast infection is plain yogurt. Yogurt contains the bacteria that naturally lives on your vulva and controls the growth of yeast. When you have time, wipe some on and leave it for a few minutes then wipe off with a damp cloth or paper towel. Make sure you're thoroughly dry before putting underwear back on!
Repeat this for 2-3 days and you'll be good to go :]
I've tried the miconazole nitrate stuff before, and it does kill the yeast but seems to upset my entire pH balance for a long time. The yogurt puts the pH and biological balance back where it belongs. If you have recurring yeast infections, try using talc (baby) powder daily to keep you dry. Yeast loves warm, most environments, so the talc is a great preventative!
Good luck, I know how irritating it can be! (+ info
How long until I can have sex after a vulvar biopsy?
I had to have a vulvar biopsy on Tuesday to check for Lichen sclerosus. My doctor said that I could exercise and have sex whenever I felt up to it. The biopsy was taken from the outer portion of the lower inner labia. I am wondering if anybody has had this done and how long it was until you could have sex again? Thanks.
A vulvar biopsy is a biopsy of the female genitals.
Umm.. What is a "Vulvar Biopsy" ? I'm sorry it didn't help, but at least i tried. :s (+ info
Do any women experience vaginal/vulvar discomfort regularly and what do you use for treatment?
I have a combination of muscle spasms in my vagina, as well as vulvodynia/vestibulitis. I have been treating it with Amitriptyline for over a year now but am sick of taking that pill. Has anyone ever been diagnosed with the same problems and take something else that works good for controlling vaginal/vulvar discomfort?
first your current medication does not treat the problem but rather the effect of the problem, hope that makes sense to you, as far as your vaginal spasms go you might want to try some natural products containing ingredients like chamomile, fever few, passionflower or peppermint or yarrow, as for the other try barberry ,black cohosh, blue cohosh, boneset, burdock, meadowsweet, scullcap, uva-ursi or vervain these are all natural anti-inflammatories a topical cream containing heartease may also be beneficial every body has it's own chemical makeup, try a mixture of these products or one at a time, until you find one that works for you hope this helps (+ info
What is the basis of differing actions of antineoplastic agents on different tissue/neoplasms?
What is the basis for differing tissue- and neoplasm-specificites of antieoplastic chemotherapeutic agents? This doubt arose because considering what the pharmacokinetics of these drugs are it remains to be answered as to why a certain agent would act only in a particular tissue or neoplasm when the mechanisms they employ are so similar, e.g., various alkylating agents in spite having same action act of different tumors with differing degrees of effectiveness. Hope someone answers the question specifically. Useful links to free-text articles would also be highly appreciated. Bye. TC.

Is there a cure for vulvar pain and itching?
Excuse me, I do not want to say my age, but i have been having vulvar itching for a week or 2 now. Every time i itch, it hurts really badly. I have tried leaving it alone, taking warm baths, it hurts all the time. It is also a little red. Please, is there any creme i can use that will take away this pain?
What can cause vulvar redness that is not yeast or an STD?
I have had an area of redness just outside of the inner labia, next to my clitoris for a couple of months now. I thought it was yeast, and have been using an anti-fungal cream for a week with no improvement. There is no burning or itching, just mild irritation. I know for certain is not an STD, but cannot for the life of me figure out what is going on. Can anyone help?
I do always wear cotton underwear and have not changed any soaps or detergents recently.
You might have an irritation due to laundry detergent you are using or the type of underwear you are wearing. Cotton undies are the best (but not the cutest) for your feminine area down there. You might want to switch to those for a while to see if that helps. :) (+ info
I am 31 weeks 1 day pregnant and suddenly experienced vulvar pain on both sides. It is on the outside and?
inside. Did anyone else experience this? I know what inguinal ligament pain feel like so it is not that, it is on the outer and inner portion and seems to be worse when I stand and walk. What treatment did your doc recommend? Is this dangerous? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for responding. I have a feeling it is that as well as round ligament pain. Thanks again for the website.
Do you varicose veins in your vulva? They can be quite uncomfortable and could possibly be the cause. I would speak to your obstetrician/gynecologist at your earliest convenience. See this web site for additional information: http://www.drspock.com/faq/0,1511,8187,00.html (+ info
I am trying to get ssi disability and medicaid. I have deen diagnosed with vulvar cancer ,I need more test to?
I need more test to see how far and where it has spread to.Cancer alone should be a disability. Right?
You will get a medicaid type coverage. May be temporary, until you can beat this thing. disability checks are complicated and difficult to receive. I would apply for everything. Once you get turned down, get a SS lawyer.
If you find that the meds are to pricey, you can contact the pharmaceutical companies and get a few months free.
Sorry to hear that you are ill. Please keep a positive outlook , and adopt a healthy diet.
Best of health to you. (+ info
What are the harmful effects from small benign neoplasms arising from endocrine organs on the patient?
Give positive answers...
Get to know them better. This is not a task only to be accomplished through dating. The more you get to know him or her, the more you can tell if you like them as a friend or something else. Just talk and do fun activities with the person.
Stop and consider why you like the person. There are many physically attractive and smart people out there. But if you see something beyond that really catches your attention, you've marked this person as unique and probably like them. Why else would they stand out from so many?
Consider how many times you think about the person. If you find yourself thinking about this person several times a day, and they are happy thoughts that possibly make your heart beat faster, then you probably like them.
Think how often you laugh at their jokes etc. When you like someone, you will find yourself laughing at things even if they aren't that funny. This is a natural attempt to make them feel appreciated.
If the one conversation between you and the person is stuck in you head and you cant stop telling people about it. this means it was important to you, and you probably like the person.
Consider how much you try to be near them. If you've planned your walking speed to catch a glimpse of them as many times of the day as possible, there is a good reason for that.
Think about how you feel if you touch him or her, by accident or on purpose. If you're still thinking about brushing shoulders several hours ago in school, then that is a special thought and you probably like them.
If you feel you're ready for a relationship, and are confident enough for a positive response, then just go ahead and ask them out. If you're unsure of their feelings for you, there are several wikihows on how to tell if someone likes you. (+ info
