31/62. Simple bone cyst of the metacarpal.

Simple bone cyst is a benign tumor-like lesion that occurs principally in the humerus and the femur. Occurrence within the hand is rare and involvement of the metacarpals is even more uncommon. Two similar cases of a simple bone cyst affecting the metacarpals were treated by complete excision of the cyst and replacement by a cortico-medullar autogenous graft.

32/62. A case of multiple simple bone cysts. With special reference to their etiology and treatment.

We report a case of multiple, simple bone cysts in long tubular, short tubular, and flat bones. The internal pressure of the cysts and the oxygen tension of cyst fluid were measured simultaneously. These values were similar to those of typical solitary cysts in other patients. curettage and bone graft onto the calcaneal cyst were effective, although steroid injection therapy into the metacarpal cyst had no effect. Piercing the ulnar and radial cysts a number of times was uniformly effective. These results may suggest that venous obstruction of the lesions play an important role in the etiology of multiple simple cysts, as shown in typical bone cysts. However, we could not exclude the possibility that simple bone cysts, solitary or multiple, represent some kind of secondary forms of other disorders, or that a simple bone cyst is a heterogeneous entity.

33/62. Aneurysmal bone cyst involving the hand: a review and report of two cases.

Two cases of aneurysmal bone cyst occurred in the hand. One involved the distal phalanx and followed a crushing injury to the tip of the finger; amputation of the part resulted in cure. The other involved almost all of the first metacarpal and was resected and replaced by an iliac bone graft. The appearance of an aneurysmal bone cyst in roentgenograms and after angiography usually is not diagnostic, although benign, progressive growth and potential for recurrence require complete removal.

34/62. Clinical and histopathologic findings in a patient with Gorlin's syndrome.

An 18-year-old patient with Gorlin's syndrome is described, and the clinical findings associated with the syndrome are discussed. The management of keratocysts occurring in patients with the syndrome requires a follow-up period of more than 5 years.

35/62. Adjuvant arterial embolization in the treatment of benign primary bone tumors in children.

This report presents an initial clinical experience with arterial embolization as adjuvent therapy in the surgical treatment of selected benign primary bone tumors in childhood. Embolization was dramatically effective in 4 children with spinal or pelvic vascular tumors. This technique facilitated local surgical resection and/or curettage. No child had evidence of local recurrence. Three of the 4 children had spinal cord or nerve root compression resulting in various degrees of paralysis prior to surgery. All treated patients had complete recovery from their paralysis. There were no complications of embolization or surgery. The treatment of benign primary bone tumors of the spine and pelvis is immeasurably improved by the adjuvant arterial embolization procedure. The immediate surgical treatment of these difficult tumors now becomes feasible with the greatly diminished blood flow resulting from embolization.

36/62. optic nerve compression due to aneurysmal bone cyst.

A 10-year-old boy developed loss of central vision in both eyes due to compression of the optic nerves by a mass arising from the sphenoid and ethmoid sinuses. Histopathologic examination of biopsy specimens showed a fibrous matrix composed of spindle-shaped cells interspersed with small and large channels, characteristic of an aneurysmal bons cyst. One year after partial excision of the intracranial and extracranial portions fo the lesions, vision had returned to nearly normal levels. Aneurysmal bone cysts rarely involve the orbits or other cranial bones to produce ocular signs and symptoms. However, since this lesion probably represents reactive proliferation of bony tissues, rather than neoplasia, the prognosis for vision and life is good.

37/62. basal cell nevus syndrome.

We report two patients with basal cell nevus syndrome. They had two previously unreported associated conditions--a myocardial fibroma and bilateral basal cell carcinomas of the soles of the feet. The syndrome is discussed, the literature is reviewed, and the management is outlined.

38/62. Two cases of nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome.

Motivated by the diagnosis and treatment of two cases of nevoid or Goltz-Gorlin syndrome, we have taken a brief look at the literature and present these two cases, which display the four principal features defining this syndrome: multiple basal cell carcinomas, maxillary cysts, skeletal anomalies, and ectopic calcifications. Certain aspects are emphasized, including the association in one of them of basal cell carcinomas with a cystic adenoma or Brooke's tumor, which, although described by other authors, is infrequent.

39/62. bone cysts containing silicone particles in bones adjacent to a carpal silastic implant.

Silastic implants for a wide variety of medical purposes are in current and frequent use worldwide. Only recently there have been reports of the migration of silicone to the surrounding tissues via lymphatics. In the present material of nine cases with carpal implants followed for more than two years, bone cysts developed in the surrounding bones on five occasions. The only cysts so far investigated thoroughly contained foreign body reaction, and silicone could be detected by electron probe microanalysis. A long-term follow-up is suggested whenever these implants are used.

40/62. Aneurysmal bone cyst of the hamate bone.

An aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is an uncommon benign bone lesion that principally occurs in long bones and in the vertebral column. The appearance of ABC in carpal bones is very rare. We report a case of ABC that occurred in the hamate bone.
