What are somethings I should look for in a good substance abuse program?

Where can I find resources for parents to be active participate in therapy sessions for drug abuse adult children who has recently been incarcerated? What are somethings I should look for in a good substance abuse program?
----------

lahacienda.org (com?) is suppose to be a top notch place according to drphil.com
anyway, there are usually tons of info in each area, look under mental health or counseling or drug addiction in the yellow pages and start calling around to find out , ask questions, attend AA meetings, naracanon meetings, ask a therapist of your own.........join a support group in town or online......or both dailystrength.org has some groups but there are probably better ones
the place where they were attending therapy or incarceration should also have suggestions
Find a drug counselor/therapist and talk to them
talk to a child psychologist

What do i have to do to become a substance abuse counselor?

i am very interested in become a substance abuse counselor. Like Dr. Drew, i want to help people with their addictions. I live in Texas. what kind of classes would i have to take in collge? how long would i have to be in college? I am planning on taking psychology next year if that helps anything!
thanks! (:
----------

You might need a Masters in Social work or a Licensed Clinical Social worker. You might also have to take State Board exams also.
It might be 6 years to be in college total.
You might need a lot more classes besides psychology or sociology.
You might need to do a practicum also.
.
I would talk to a college professor in Social Work to have him or her give you more information.
I don't think anyone would hire you if you didn't have the necessary requirements.
Be prepared to work in "bad" neighborhoods or with low income families also. Be able to handle stressful situations also.  (+ info)

How will I get to find substance abuse treatment centers in Lincolndale, New York?

I need to do this for my friend. Among the two of us, she has always been the more responsible one. She looked after me as if I was her little sister. Ever since her boyfriend broke up with her, though, things changed. I would often find her slumped on her bed whenever I visit her house. She hid it from us, but she has also been indulging in alcoholic beverages as well. I sat beside her all day yesterday. We reminisced and cried, and she finally agreed to get herself treated for her alcohol addiction. This is why I need to find substance abuse treatment centers. Any help will be surely appreciated.
----------

Oh, I'm so sorry about what happened to your friend. It's really not worth it-- ruining her life over just a guy, I mean. It's a good thing that she has already realized that she's not doing herself a favor by indulging in alcohol. Just keep on being there for her as your moral support and encouragement would surely make a lot of difference. As for treatment centers, the links below will help you in finding them. You can also ask your friend's parents to take her to a hospital so she can get checked up on by a doctor. The doctor will then be able to tell your friend what kind of treatment program she should undergo as well as which treatment center will get to provide her with this kind of treatment. Good luck!  (+ info)

Any substance abuse treatment centers for people with ketamine addiction in Callicoon, New York?

I would like to know more about ketamine and its effects upon those who are addicted to it. I figured my best bet would be to look for patients in substance abuse treatment centers and ask them about their experience with the drug.
----------

Finding substance abuse treatment centers won't take you too much time. Just the links below will get to help you out in your search. You can also get recommendations from doctors and healthcare providers. The problem here, though, is that treatment centers are usually very stringent about the privacy of their patients. You will probably have to settle with interviewing the therapists and counselors. Nevertheless, good luck!  (+ info)

What type of education would I need to become an RN at a substance abuse detox facility?

I am currently going to school for pre-health with a nursing concentration, until I have the requirements to apply for nursing. I would like to be able to work as an RN in a substance abuse facility. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advise as to how to go about doing this? I do not know if I will need to specialize in a certain area in order to do so or not? If anyone could help me out in regards to what to do education wise I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

Hi,

First off, good for you for wanting to work in addiction treatment! I'm an addictions counselor and have been working in mental health (mostly suicide prevention) for 7 years and we certainly need more qualified RNs in the field. So I think you will have an easy time finding work once you're finished with school.

As for your question... To become an RN, you need to go to nursing school. Although I'm sure you already know this. As for specializing in addiction treatment, I don't believe there are any additional requirements, but it would be good if you have experience working with addicts or at least a greater knowledge of treating clients with addiction. So I would suggest trying to get an internship of some sort with a treatment center in your area. They may not let you do much while you're in school, but you will be able to put it on your resume. You can learn a lot from observing how things work in treatment. The other suggestion I have would be to take some extra classes that focus on substance abuse. Drug addicts and alcoholics face a variety of special issues separate from the "normal" population you would be working with in a hospital. Most community colleges and some universities now offer programs where you can learn more about these issues. I don't know where you live, but you may want to start looking for college programs titled "Addictions Counseling" or "Addictions Studies." Classes you may want to take would be any type of pharmacology, a bloodborne pathogens/infectious disease class, and even alternative treatments to addiction classes. It could also help to take a few classes for addictions counselors like group therapy, individual therapy, or something similar. These will definitely help you in the future in terms of communicating with your clients.

The most important thing I would think an RN working in addiction should have to be educated about is prescription drugs of abuse. Normally when I do an intake on a client coming into treatment, they have been medically prescribed multiple addictive drugs that only contribute to and exacerbate their disease (addiction). Usually these include opiate painkillers, benzodiazepines, and other sedatives and tranquilizers. I had a client once who was on NINE different benzos which she had been on for years, all prescribed by doctors for things like insomnia, anxiety, and even hypothyroidism. This is so egregious and disgusting to me! They were killing her. She obviously had to be medically detoxed for risk of seizures and death from her meds. And needless to say, after being evaluated by our MD, she didn't NEED any of the pills.

Anyway, I'm rambling. Just excited to see someone wanting to help in the field of addiction treatment. It is rare these days, it seems. But what a satisfying and rewarding job. Good luck to you!!!  (+ info)
