What do i major in? i want to work with substance abuse patients?

i want to prescribe medicine for substance abuse patients (work in a rehab). I dont want to be a counselor or psychologist and talk about their lives, i just want to prescribe medicine and help with addiction.
----------

The most valuable thing you can ever learn about substance abuse is that it is the symptom, not the illness. To stop a person abusing you need to address the underlying illness (whatever that may be), and long term medication just can't do that. I'm certain that's not the answer you were looking for, but it's just my two cents worth. If you really want to help substance abusers then psychology is the way to go.  (+ info)

How effective are substance abuse treatments?

I have recently convinced my husband to undergo a substance abuse treatment, and now I am searching for an addiction center that will fit him. But just a few days ago, a friend of mine called me, and said that his son went back to using drugs after two months of abstinence. Now, that gives me doubts if treatment programs can effectively help my husband. Is relapse a normal occurrence? Will I keep my trust on addiction treatment programs?
----------

it's a complicated answer because some treatment programs are effective for some people. it's really good that you and your husband are trying to find a facility that will best meet him and his needs. it's also important that your husband is doing this willingly because treatment is most effective when the patient actually wants to get better. also, it is very common for relapses to occur after inpatient treatment. sometimes this happens because people think that treatment ends after they leave the hospital. that is only the beginning of treatment; after leaving inpatient, it's so incredibly important to have continued outpatient support in order to most effectively prevent relapses.  (+ info)

Where can I find current statistics on substance abuse counselors in recovery themselves?

I'm a graduate student writing a paper on dual relationships in substance abuse counseling. I haven't found any current statistics or much reliable research. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!
----------

Thats a good question. I work at a D&A rehab myself, and although this is just personal experience, I would say about 50% of people from the counselor level and up through supervisors and directors are in recovery. On the other hand, about 80-90% of the techs (the people below the counselors who are basically the baby sitters) are in recovery. I attribute this to their lack of college degrees and licensure. Thats a good idea for a paper. Good luck.  (+ info)

Substance Abuse Study - can you refer me to the actual study that generated the finding mentioned below?

A study on substance abuse made this finding , "teenagers who say they've learned a lot about the risks of drugs from their parents are much less likely to try marijuana than those who say they learned nothing from them." Would you be able to guide me to such a study with this finding?
----------

I have a few studies that would support this assertion. Now, be mindful that quotes such as the one you listed are rarely a direct quote from one study, because news and advocacy groups often bend the words both to make them easy to understand and help their cause. But these studies do support the assertion..
